Michael Keatonhas explained how his Oscars appearance as “Batman” came to be, and did a little roasting of his own when addressing his two would-be adversaries. All of this was, of course, in reference to the appearance Keaton made on screen asArnold SchwarzeneggerandDanny DeVitotook on while presenting at this year’s Oscars ceremony last weekend, and it is clear that the banter is not over yet.

Batman Returns

Batman Returns sees the return of Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne after his victory over the Joker. This time, the Dark Knight faces a new threat in the form of The Penguin, an outcast who wants revenge on Gotham City. Featuring Danny DeVito as Oswald Cobblepot, Michelle Pfeiffer as Selina Kyle a.k.a. Catwoman, and Christopher Walken as Max Schreck, Batman Returns is Tim Burton’s second and final movie based on the iconic DC comics character.

On Sunday night, one of the highlights of the event sawSchwarzenegger and DeVito roasting Keaton’s Batmanas the actor sat in the audience stony-faced and gave them a “come on then” gesture to the delight of the audience and viewers at home. Keaton appeared onJimmy Kimmel Live!on Wednesday, and explained how the little back and forth came about when either Kimmel or the show’s producer contacted him beforehand to arrange the whole thing. While being questioned about his brilliant hard-man reaction to the pair of former comic book villains, Keaton suggested that he didn’t see any reason why he couldn’t beat both villains anytime he liked.

“You know what?” he said referencing Schwarzenegger’s Mr Freeze. “You’ll be back when I tell you to come back.”

However, it seems that Freeze would not be the villain that Keaton would be too worried about. That honor would definitely go toDeVito’s Penguin, a villain that his Batman already defeated once inBatman Returns. He said:

“Danny is the one I’d worry about ’cause he’s sneaky. He’d creep up behind you, and he has the height advantage because he’s so [small]. You don’t know where he is. He’s always sneaking around. The other guy I would just put away. He’s too slow.”

Keaton added that he also made sure he had a wardrobe change before his big moment.

I thought, if I’m going to do this, I’m going to Bruce Wayne it up a little bit.

Will Michael Keaton Play Batman Again?

Following his return to the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman inThe Flash, there is still the lingering question of whether Keaton will be up for reprising his role again in the future. Originally, there were plans for Keaton to have a much longer stint as the Dark Knight, withan appearance in the cancelledBatgirlmoviebeing filmed before the movie was scrapped, and the possibility of him playing an older Bruce Wayne in his own film.

Although those plans have now changed, with James Gunn’s DCU taking center stage,Keaton is certainly open to bringing back his version of the characterfor another round. Following the reaction to his Oscars skit, the possibility of that happening could have been bumped up a few places as an “Elseworlds” project.

Of course, for now, there are no such plans in place, but Keaton will be bringing back another of his famous ’80s characters this year with the release ofBeetlejuice, Beetlejuicein September. If that legacy sequel proves to be a big hit, then it may not be out of the question for him to add another Batman return to his list of upcoming projects. We can but hope.
