Back in September, principal photography got under way on Universal Pictures' long-awaitedUntitled Matt Damon Bourne Sequel, a.k.a.Bourne 5, with producerFrank Marshallsharing thefirst photoofMatt Damonas Jason Bourne. Production is still under way, with new photos arriving from the Kreuzberg, Germany set, thanks toWe Got This Coveredand several other sources. While all of these photos featureMatt Damonin action, one of them reveals his face has been bloodied quite badly, despite the smile on his face.

We last sawMatt DamonasJason Bournein 2007’sThe Bourne Ultimatum, which wrapped up a trilogy of adaptations based on Robert Ludlum’s spy novels. After that adaptation hit theaters,Matt Damonsaid that he wouldn’t come back for another follow-up unless directorPaul Greengrasscame back, and they had a story they both wanted to work on.Matt Damonrevealed this fall that the script, co-written byPaul Greengrassand Christopher Rouse (Captain Phillips), is set in a “post-Snowden” world and will be shot all throughout Europe, with the shoot ending in Las Vegas.

While no specific story details have been released, the actor’s “post-Snowden” statement is quite telling. The classified documents leaked by Edward Snowden, which revealed the National Security Agency’s tendency to spy on the American public, created a firestorm of controversy, so it will be interesting to see how the filmmakers approach this hot-button issue, and how Bourne is involved.Matt Damonalso revealed in September that Jason Bourne does have his memory back, but he still doesn’t know everything about his past.

We do know that this movie won’t feature any type of crossover with Universal’s 2012 spinoffThe Bourne Legacy, which starredJeremy Renneras a different Treadstone agent named Aaron Cross. Universal is still developing a sequel toThe Bourne Legacy, withJeremy Rennerslated to return, but it isn’t known when that project will go into production. Universal has already set a July 11, 2025 release date forBourne 5, putting this sequel up against STX Entertainment’sThe Space Between Us
