Marvelalready has a large presence on the small screen, with ABC’sAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.andAgent Carter, along with four Netflix shows (Daredevil,Jessica Jones, the upcomingLuke CageandIron Fist).Varietyreports that another one of the studio’scomic bookproperties,Cloak and Dagger, has been given a straight-to-series order on Freeform, the cable network formerly known as ABC Family. The show will bypass the traditional pilot phase with this series order, but it isn’t known how many episodes we’re getting in this first season.
Cloak and Daggerwill be based on the romantic comic book series of the same name, which follows the title characters, also known as Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson. The story tracks these teenage characters from much different backgrounds who become connected when they gain mysterious newsuper powers, while they start to fall for each other. Tandy has the ability to shoot “light daggers,” while Tyrone can “engulf others in darkness.” The duo soon learn that they’re better off sticking together, despite their romantic feelings for one another complicating matters.

Marveland Freeform haven’t found a writer to adapt the comic book quite yet, but the search is currently under way, with Marvel Studios and ABC Signature Studios set to produce theTV series. The story will be targeted towards young adults, which fits perfectly within Freeform’s 14-34 demographic. The show may provide a nice companion to the network’sShadowhunters, Freeform’s first foray into thefantasygenre, based on The Mortal Instruments books by Cassandra Clare. That show was recently picked up for a second season.
Oddly enough,ABC Familywas said to be developing aCloak and Daggerseries way back in 2010, which would have followed the title character’s adventures throughout New Orleans, but that never came to fruition. WhenMarvelStudios was first formed, the studio hinted that this comic book could be developed into a feature film, but that also never happened. It isn’t known when production will begin on the new series, or when it may premiere. No casting has been announced at this time.
