If you’ve been waiting forM3GANto get its digital release, that day has come, and much earlier than expected. On Tuesday, the hit horror film was released by Universal and Blumhouse for rental or purchase on PVOD. PerCollider, you can purchase a digital copy for $24.99 while renting the film will run a bit cheaper at $19.99. There had been no prior announcement thatM3GANwould be getting a digital release so soon, coming less than three weeks after the movie’s release in theaters earlier this month.
As it currently stands,M3GANis the highest-grossing film of the year, pulling in more than $124 million. With a modest budget of $12 million, the film has been an incredible success at the box office. Its reviews have also been very positive, scoring a 94% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes. It was no surprise when it was announced that a sequel, dubbedM3GAN 2.0, is now in the works. Though, given the continued success of the movie in theaters, it is a bit surprising to see the film get its early digital release.

The question is if a future release will restore some of the gory footage that had to be cut to secure a PG-13 rating. While the film has clearly been a big success with the rating it has, some fans are curious to see howM3GANwould have turned out if it had been an R-rated film. Screenwriter Akela Cooper has teased that the original cut is “way gorier,” and that’s led to a fan desire to see a home media release get a director’s cut.
“There should be an unrated version at some point,” Cooper told theL.A. Times. “I heard it is on the books. But yes, it was way gorier. Her body count in the script was higher than in the movie. It wasn’t a Gabriel [in Malignant]-scale massacre, but she did kill a bunch more people, including a couple of characters whom James (Wan) was like, ‘I like what you did with those people, but I want them to live.'”
