Carrie Fisher’s brother Todd reveals new details about Leia’s return inThe Rise of Skywalker.Star Warsfans have been curious to see how J.J. Abrams and the Lucasfilm team brought Fisher back through the use of unused footage from 2015’sThe Force Awakens. According to Todd Fisher, it was a pretty amazing feat that pays tribute to his late sister. “She was going to be the big payoff in the final film,” says Fisher. “She was going to be the last Jedi, so to speak. That’s cool right?”
The idea all along was to have each of the three originalStar Warscharacters have a featured part in the sequel trilogy.The Force Awakenswas Han Solo,The Last Jediwas Luke Skywalker, andThe Rise of Skywalkerwas supposed to be General Leia Organa. However, Carrie Fisher tragically passed away at the end of 2016 and things had to be shifted around as far as the storytelling is concerned. When J.J. Abrams came back on, it was revealed that they were going to take unused footage fromThe Force Awakensto bring Fisher back. Todd Fisher recently shed some more light on the process. He had this to say.
“The truth is that J.J. Abrams was great friends with Carrie… he had an extraordinary sense of love for her.They had eight minutes of footage. They grabbed every frame and analyzed it… and then reverse-engineered it and (got) it into the story the right way. It’s kind of magical.”
As for how that “reverse-engineering” will impactThe Rise of Skywalker, Todd Fisher would not go any further. Lucasfilm and Disney have the movie shrouded in mystery, even though we’ve seen footage ofCarrie Fisherin the trailers. For Todd Fisher, it’s a great way to say goodbye to his sister andLeia Organa. He explains.
“This is, in its own way, a payoff… It’s Carrie talking to us all from beyond. The beautiful thing about the concept of the Force is that there is no real death; you just exist in another dimension. So Carrie is looking down or sideways or wherever and is still part of us. To be able to see that - it’s magical stuff only in the movies.”
There were rumors making the rounds that said a young Leia and Luke were going to be shown doing Jedi training together inThe Rise of Skywalker, but that has yet to be confirmed. Todd Fisher says, “People used to say to me, ‘Why is it that Carrie never gets a lightsaber and chops up some bad guys?'” That’s not a bad question, which led Fisher to note, “Obi-Wan was in his prime when he was Carrie’s age!” While we probably won’t see Carrie Fisher wielding a Lightsaber, we did see a tease of her Force powers inThe Last Jedi.
The Rise of Skywalkeropens in theaters on December 20th, which is just around the corner.Star Warsfans are looking into every theory and supposed leak to try and piece the story together, but so far, nothing has been able to stick with the majority of fans, save for a few bits of Kylo Ren intel.
