Kevin Costnerhas recalled one of the most memorable moments of his career in a retrospect of his movie back catalog. Although the actor has appeared in dozens of movies, there is one particularly challenging scene that Costner remembers as a stand-out of anything he has done – the buffalo hunt fromDances with Wolves.
Like many of Costner’s movies,Dances with Wolvesissteeped in Western themes and historical eventsfrom America’s past, and that is where the multi-talented star has found his comfort zone over the last four decades.Dances with Wolvesbecame Costner’s first big achievement as a director, soaring to a box office gross of $424 million, and earning him multiple Oscars, including a Best Director win.

Dances With Wolves
In an interview withGQ, Costner explained the great effort that went into filming the buffalo hunt scenes. This included an unprecedented six-day shoot involving the use of a helicopter, horses, trucks and a herd of 3,500 buffalo. Costner explained:
“Well, I’ll tell you what was uncertain was, were we gonna even be able to find the buffalo? And we finally did in the middle of South Dakota. Number one, I was so grateful that they even existed, and then number two, had to negotiate with the rancher, ‘Will you let me chase them?'"

“He was the former lieutenant governor of the state, so he was a pretty evolved guy, but he said,“You wanna chase my buffalo?“And I was young, and he finally said, “Okay, we’ll chase them, we’ll chase them,“and that son of a bitch, I love him forever. He’s like 80 years old, he got in his truck, he got five other trucks, he got a helicopter, and we started chasing them for six days.”

It was fast, it was scary, and it was, like you say, it was beautiful. That’s something I’ll never forget.

The buffalo hunt scene is one of the film’s most impressive sequences, and it is one that helped elevate the movie’s performance at the box office, with critics, and with audiences. The question now is whether Costner can equal it with his latest venture,Horizon: An American Saga.
Kevin Costner is Not Afraid to Push Boundaries with His Movies
WhileDances with Wolvesprovided a number of challenges for Costner over 30 years ago, his new movie Horizon will attempt to bring a four-part epic to life that could either be the director’s magnum opus or one of his biggest disasters.
