While a report has been floating around that claimedJurassic World 2would have an astronomically high budget of $260 million, it seems like that won’t be the case. At the moment, production reportedly isn’t even far enough along to determine a budget. So let’s unpack this rumor, shall we?
This all started with a Spanish language magazine calledEl Pais Semenal. Recently, directorJ.A. Bayonadid an interview with the publication and via a translation from the JurassicWorldSpain Twitter account, it seemed like the director revealed the budget for theJurassic Worldsequel would be $260 million. That would be a significant increase from the $150 million reported budget for the originalJurassic World. However, /Film has now discovered from a “reliable source” that this reported budget is not true and the actual budget of theJurassic World sequelwon’t be nearly that high. Here is what they had to say.
“A reliable source in the Jurassic World camp has revealed to us that J.A. Bayona did not reveal the budget for Jurassic World 2. In fact, development hasn’t even reached a point where a budget can be finalized, though our source said that the budget will not be anywhere near $260 million. Despite the fact that this was a tangible print source, the information about the budget was either misinterpreted or fabricated.”
WhileJurassic Worlddid bring in a ridiculous amount of money at the box office, $1.67 billion worldwide to be more exact, a $260 million budget did seem exceedingly high. We have heard thatJurassic World 2will be taking place outside of just an island withdinosaurs, meaning that the movie will be slightly more expensive, but that doesn’t quite justify that much of a bump in the budget. It is also safe to assume thatreturning castmembersChris PrattandBryce Dallas Howardwill be getting a pretty solid payday, but again, not that solid.
While we regularly hear of budgets well over $100 million in the modern Hollywood landscape, it is pretty rare to hear a reported budget over $200, let alone $260. Not only that, but often times when budgets get that out of control, the movies seem to get out of control as well.Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justicehad a reported budget of $250 million and that movie was critically panned on arrival and didn’t make nearly what the studio was hoping. Perhaps the best (or worst) example wasThe Lone Ranger, which had a reported budget of $215 million and only grossed $260 million worldwide. It was also critically panned. So ultimately, it is probably for the best thatJurassic World 2will not have an insanely high budget.
