WillThe Rise of Skywalkerbe the last we see of Finn in a galaxy far, far away?John Boyegaisn’t totally ruling out a return, but he has some strict conditions. First and foremost, he’s only willing to come back for a new movie and isn’t interested at all in starring in a Disney+ show. Plus, he would need his co-stars Daisy Ridley and Oscar Issac to agree as well, and that could be the real challenge.
The cast has been promoting the release of Episode IX as of late, which is set to conclude the Skywalker saga. During a recent interview, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and Daisy Ridley were asked if they would be interested incontinuing the stories of Finn, Poe and Reysomewhere down the line. Boyega had this to say.
“In what? You ain’t going toDisney+me! [laughs]”
Lighthearted as hisStar Warscomments may have been, they seem to come from a genuine place. Boyega is far more interested in starring in movies and isn’t interested in a series. Disney+ is currently airingThe Mandalorian, the first Star Wars live-action series, with aRogue Oneprequel starring Diego Luna also in the works, as well as an Obi-Wan Kenobi series that will see Ewan McGregor return as the iconic Jedi. Speaking further, Boyega explained that he’d come back for more movies, under one condition.
“I ain’t getting no Disney Plus! I’m watching it, though, but I’ll stay in the feature films… As long as Daisy and Oscar are down for it, then I’ll come back.”
Therein lies the problem.Daisy Ridley and Oscar Isaac are very in-demand stars. This franchise has taken up the better chunk of their time for the last five years. With the trilogy coming to a close, they both want to move on. Isaac says he feels “happy” and “fulfilled” with where things are now. Ridley explained she would be hesitant because she feels this is a great conclusion.
“I just don’t know if anything could top this one, honestly. I think it’s just a great story and a great close, and even though obviously the characters continue to exist, it would have to be so extraordinary [to return], and I don’t know if that’s possible.”
With all of that having been said, it seems highly unlikely that we will see Finn, Poe or Rey back on screen after this movie arrives. At least not in the near future, anyway. It’s certainly possible, if not a certainty, we’ll see them pop up in the expanded universe at some point, be it in a novel, comic book or video game though. That will have to be enough, unless Disney can change Boyega’s tune.Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalkeris directed by J.J. Abrams and is set to hit theaters on December 20.
