Grips and lightening technicians are some of the most hard to phase individuals on the planet. Especially since they are made up of some of the roughest, toughest men and women alive in the film industry. They’ve seen everything, both in front of and behind the camera. And their job is to be non-responsive to whatever drama is unfolding around them so they can complete their individual task at hand. So it definitely says something thatJared Leto’sJokerbrought everyone on the set ofSuicide Squadto a dead standstill.
Good or bad, it definitely hints that he’s doing something new with the character. And it might be one of the ultimate highlights of theDCEUwhen all of the smoke is cleared. Right now, on the eve of its release,Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justiceis not faring well with critics, pulling 32% on Rotten Tomatoes. While some still think this might halt production on futureDC Comics movies, it will not affectSuicide Squad. The movie is in the can. And we’ve already seen two different trailers. Rest assured, it’s coming. AndJared Leto’s method performance as TheClown Prince of Crimeis shaping up to be something very special. Says directorDavid Ayerto Total Film via DCVertigoDaily about havingJared Letoarrive on set, which apparently was a real show stopper.
“What Jared has done is absolutely incredible. When he steps onto the set the world stops. Everything stops. What he’s done is so powerful, so menacing, and so palpable, you can feel him. The crew stops working and just watches him. I have to get everybody going again because he’s so fascinating.”
It has already been reported numerous times thatJared Letostayed in character throughout much of the shoot. And most of his co-stars claim to have never really met the man behind the clown make-up. There have also been plenty of stories about the weird and unique gifts he gave stars such asWill SmithandMargot Robbie, which included a live rat and a dead hog, along with spent bullet casings. While we’ve seen a few quick glimpses of The Joker in the two previous trailers, we’ll have to wait until this August to see how this translates to the screen.
Because so many great actors have played the Joker before him, the casting ofJared Letowas controversial. And the verdict is still out. But he’s obviously one of theSuicide Squad’s biggest draws, and all the weird stories and publicity surely help spur the fire on. Anyone with a vested interest in superhero movies is eager to see what he’s bringing to the table in full. This promises to be a different Joker than we’re ever seen before. But there’s no telling yet where or how that will sit with fans.
