Dwayne Johnsonhas already had an extremely busy year, even though we aren’t even half-way through 2016 yet. The actor has finished work on Season 2 of his HBO seriesBallersand recently wrapped onBaywatch, which is set to hit theaters next May. Now he’s getting ready to move over toFast and Furious 8, which has already startedshooting. It seems the actor could be adding another project to his growing slate in the near future, with new talk of aFast & Furiousspinoff centering on his character, Hobbs.

Dwayne Johnsonjoined the beloved franchise as Hobbs in 2011’sFast Five, and he has quickly become a franchise favorite, reprising his role in 2013’sFast & Furious 6and last year’sFurious 7. During an interview withComicBook.com, the actor’s producing partnerHiram Garciateased that there have always been talks about aHobbs spinoff, but scheduling has become a challenge. Here’s what the producer had to say below.

“I think there’s always been conversations for that. The scheduling of it all is a challenge but there are always talks about a potential spinoff movie and what we can do with it. DJ and I were just talking about that the other day - our visions for it. There’s a real goal for that and we can have enough fun with that where we’ve earned that now with the audience. He’s a beloved enough character that they’d love to see what a ride with him would be like in his world. We have tons of history that we’ve crafted for this guy that we continue to sprinkle in throughout the movies. You’ll see a little bit more in this movie but ultimately we want to take that ride and spin him off and have some fun with it.”

As forFast & Furious 8, which is currentlyshooting in Cuba, there is still much we don’t know about the story, but it seems he’ll have a much larger role this time around. The producer admitted that they only had a few weeks on the set ofFurious 7due to scheduling constraints, but he’ll have a much bigger role inFast & Furious 8. Here’s what the producer had to say below.

“I’ve been in the mix withChris Morgan, the writer, really dialing in the Hobbs character, which is one of our all-time favorite characters. Hobbs was one of the first characters we merged together on and when Fast approached [Dwayne Johnson], telling him about the character they wanted to create, [Dwayne Johnson] and I were able to sit down and craft this guy that we would just laugh out loud at the lines we would come up with. When you may say you’re gonna put a hurt on someone so bad you’ll make their mama wish they kept their legs closed, stuff like that where we can’t even finish the line before laughing - that’s the fun we love. I love coming back into this space. On the last movie, due to schedule restraints, we were only able to play on it for a couple weeks. In this one, we’re really spread throughout the movie, so it’s great to be back up here and we’ll be back on set on Wednesday.”

AfterFast & Furious 8wraps production,Dwayne Johnsonwill move on to shoot theJumanjiremake, which is slated for release on June 08, 2025. The actor also has a busy 2017 lined up as well, with the video game adaptationRampageset to shoot next year, with other projects in the works such asSan Andreas 2and a remake ofBig Trouble in Little China. We’ll continue to keep you posted with more news on this potentialFast & FuriousHobbs spinoff.
