20th Century Fox has released a brand new trailer forStuber. This action/comedy was one of the last projects that actually was finished by Fox before Disney took over following the multi-billion dollar merger in March. So, this is technically a Disney movie now. It made its debut at SXSW in March to something of a mixed response. Though, it should be noted what screened was a work in progress cut. The movie is anchored bySilicon Valleystar Kumail Nanjiani andGuardians of the Galaxystar Dave Bautista, who make for a surprising yet effective pairing, based on the footage being showcased here.
The trailer kicks off by offering usa little slice of life for an Uber driver. As we see, it’s a colorful lifestyle sometimes, even if it’s not in the most appealing of ways. That is then juxtaposed against a big and brash cop who, unfortunately, can’t drive himself around given a recent eye surgery. So he resorts to taking an Uber instead and hijinks ensue. There are more than a few fun gags peppered throughout the trailer and the whole thing is, rather appropriately, set to the tune ofI Get Aroundby The Beach Boys. There is one particularly great bit toward the end of the trailer that displays the blend of action and comedy at play here.
But the real seller here is the chemistry between the two leads, Kumail Nanjiani andDave Bautista. These two actors couldn’t be more different, though they work together incredibly well. Nanjiani has quietly become one of the better actors working in comedy today, whereas Bautista is a wrestler-turned-actor who had done a lot of action up to this point in his career. Though, he’s proved that he has comedy chops as well and he’s working all of his muscles here. The rest of the ensemble includes Natalie Morales, Betty Gilpin, Jimmy Tatro, Mira Sorvino and Karen Gillan, withThe Raid’s Iko Uwais as the villain.
Stubercenters on a mild-mannered Uber driver named Stu (Kumail Nanjiani) who unwittingly picks up a passenger named Vic (Dave Bautista). As it turns out, Vic is an off duty cop who is hot on the trail of a brutal killer that he’s been tracking for months. Stu ends up as a reluctant participant in the case and the events that follow, all because he needs to maintain hisever-important five-star Uber rating.
This comes from Michael Dowse, who previously helmed episodes ofFuture ManandMan Seeking Woman. The script was penned by Tripper Clancy, with Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley on board as producers.Stuberis set to arrive in theaters on July 12, where it will be competing directly with the Sam Raimi-produced alligator horror flickCrawl.
