House of the Dragonis the firstGame of Thronesspinoff to reach HBO; however, it may not be the last. The upcoming series will focus on the Targaryen dynasty and the civil war which ensues. Until now, we’ve only had theA Song of Ice and Fireadaptation,Game of Thrones. However, there’s plenty of source material from George R.R. Martin that could be crafted into television shows.
During aninterview with The Hollywood Reporter, co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik explains howHouse of the Dragoncould be the base for more stories in the future. “The Targaryens span both directions,” Sapochnik says. “So as a spine to other possible stories and spinoffs… this is a great place to start.” Sapochnik is right. The Targaryens or other characters introduced within the show could be explored at any point in time, from Aegon’s conquest to the Doom of Valyria.

HBO Chief Content officer Casey Bloys says, “I also liked the idea of focusing on one family, and obviously the Targaryens have a lot of drama to go around. I also liked how empires can quickly fall - those are the types of conversations we are having in our own country, which I don’t think is anything I would’ve thought we’d be talking about 20 years ago.”
