That’s a wrap onAwayat Netflix. The streaming service has decided to cancel the sci-fi/drama after just one season. The series was led by Oscar-winner Hilary Swank and had seemingly been a hit, based on the available data. But with everything that has happened in 2020, these decisions have become more complicated. A variety of factors may have played into the decision. Either way, this is going to be a one-and-done for Netflix.
According to multiple reports,Awayhas officially been given the ax. The cancellation comes just six weeks after the show’s debut.Netflixhas not provided a specific reason for the cancelation. However, as we’ve seen with shows such asI Am Not Okay With ThisandGlowin recent months, delays and additional production costs brought on by new health and safety protocols have led to planned seasons being scrapped. Though speculative at this point, it’s possible that additional costs and delays factored into the decision to scrapAwayalready. In any event, Hilary Swank’s mission to Mars is over.
Awaydebuted in September.Netflix historically does not share ratings informationbut the show quickly shot to the top of the service’s daily streaming charts. Critically speaking, it is a bit of a mixed bag. The show currently holds a 59 percent critical approval rating to go along with a 60 percent audience score. Since that isn’t exactly glowing on either side of the line, the decision to cancel the show may have been made a bit easier. The cast for the show also includes Josh Charles, Talitha Bateman, Mark Ivanir, Ato Essandoh, Ray Panthaki, Vivian Wu and Monique Curnen.
The series was created by Andrew Hinderaker. It centers on an American astronaut named Emma Green (Hilary Swank) who prepares to lead an international crew on the first mission to Mars. Emma is forced to reconcile her decision to leave behind her husband (Josh Charles) and teenage daughter (Talitha Bateman) just as they need her most. The crew’s journey into space intensifies and their personal dynamics, as well as the effects of being away from their loved ones back on Earth, become progressively complicated. Jessica Goldberg served as showrunner. Hinderaker, Goldberg, Jason Katmis, Matt Reeves, Andrew Hinderaker, Edward Zwick, Hilary Swank, Adam Kassan and Jeni Mulein served as executive producers.
It has been a particularly rough couple of months for cancellations by Netflix. Recently,Dark Crystal: Age of Resistancewas scrapped after a single season, withAltered Carbongetting the boot after two seasons. Other shows that recently met their end includeTeenage Bounty HuntersandThe Society. Because Netflix makes all of its money from subscriptions they have a specific way of looking at the numbers to determine if it makes financial sense to move forward with a particular show. Oftentimes, new product generates more attention, which is why few shows ever make it beyond a few seasons, withStranger ThingsandOrange Is the New Blackamong the exceptions to that rule.
