James Gunnwas already developing his own style of filmmaking when he helmedGuardians of the Galaxyfor Marvel Studios. According to his brother,Sean Gunn, it was getting the chance to work on the MCU movie that finally allowed the writer/director to hone his skills and hit his own personal bullseye for the first time.
Now Gunn’s Marvel journey is seemingly over, with his path instead lying over at DC Studios as join CEO with his longtime working partner Peter Safran. While discussingGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3withScreen Rant, Sean Gunn noted how his brother’s filmmaking has been massively helped by being part of the cosmic franchise. He explained:

“Guardians helped James, as a creator, stop circling around the bullseye and really find it. It’s almost like Guardians was the key that unlocked the door that now is open to all sorts of different things. I think there’s so much more to explore. There’s so many more stories to tell and all that, but it’s always going to be the thing that really got there first in a way.But it was really awesome for me to go into even the first movie and think, “Oh, this is such a bigger project. Maybe it’ll be that much harder for James.” And for some reason, I don’t know what it is about him, but it seemed easier. It seemed like it was more him; it was more his style. He was more comfortable on set and continues to do that, which is pretty awesome. It’s a good way to tackle things.”

James Gunn Was Allowed To Make Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 As He Wanted.
There are always a lot of opinions about how controlling Marvel Studios, and of course Disney, are when it comes to new additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is clear that withGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and indeed all of the Guardians movies, James Gunn has been given carte blanche to do exactly what he wanted…even dropping the MCU’s first F-bomb.
Although the MCU has come close to dropping the F-bomb plenty of times in the past – with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury coming closest as he was dusted in the post-credits scene ofAvengers: Infinity War– and even though PG-13 films are given a free pass to use one instance of strong language it has always refrained. Then James Gunn comes along. It was reported earlier in the week that Kevin Feige even asked Gunn if he really wanted to be the person known for delivering the first F-bomb of the franchise…to which the director gave an emphatic “Yes!”
From the first reviews, it is clear thatGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3is one of the more boundary-pushing entries in the MCU, with some dark themes running through it. Gunn has always been happier working in R-rated material, and he has been allowed to move as close to that as possible in his final Marvel offering.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3is out in theaters worldwide now.
