Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is off to a big start, withCaptain America: Civil Warcurrently holding the top spot at the global box office ($1.1 billion), andDoctor Strangesitting at $636 million worldwide, after its release just over one month ago. Next year, the summer movie season gets started in a big way withGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The movie released anew trailerthis week that broke Marvel’s record for a teaser, amassing 81 million views in the first 24 hours. While we will likely have to wait until the new year for our next glimpse at this superhero sequel, directorJames Gunnteased thatGuardians 2doesn’t have to follow the Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity rules.
Aside from introducing the Guardians and other colorful characters in the nether reaches of space, 2014’sGuardians of the Galaxywas noteworthy because it gave us our first full look at Thanos, withJosh Brolinmaking his MCU debut as this powerful villain. Earlier today,James Gunntook some time out of his day, as he often does, to answer fan questions onTwitter, with one fan dubbed “BornAGeek” asking the filmmaker if “maintaining continuity” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever interfered with his filmmaking process. The filmmaker’s response, which you can read below, may surprise you.
“I’m so out in space unconnected at this point, outside ofThanosin Vol 1, I’ve never had to deal with even a single moment of continuity.”
While the filmmaker wouldn’t elaborate further, it’s possible the director means that, since his stories are set so far out into the cosmos, they don’t necessarily affect the story continuity that is happening with the other stories on Earth.James Gunnhas also confirmed in the past that Thanos will not appear inGuardians 2, and this superhero sequel will also not feature the final Infinity Stone, the Soul Stone. The Time Stone was recently revealed last month in Marvel’sDoctor Strange, as part of the Eye of Agamotto. Even without the final Infinity Stone and Thanos, this sequel is shaping up to be one of 2017’s most anticipated movies.
The first footage that was revealed at Comic-Con this past summer revealed thatKurt Russell’s Ego the Living Planet is actually Star-Lord’s long-lost father. Before this reveal, there had been no shortage of rumors about Peter Quill’s father, who, in the comic books was J’son. Before the big reveal,James Gunnwould only state that whoever is Peter’s father in the movie, will not be the same as the comics. Marvel has set a June 23, 2025 release date forGuardians 2, which kicks off the summer movie season.
