After several years of delays, The Hollywood Gang production company is finally moving forward withRobin Hood 2058, which offers a futuristic take on the classicRobin Hoodstory.The Hollywood Reporterreveals that the production company has brought on British writerTony Leeto work on the script. Other writers who have worked on the project in the past includeJason Dean Hall(Paranoia) and Michael Ross (The Throwaways). Gianni Nunnari, known for his work on300andImmortalsis producing with The Hollywood Gang.
The story is set in a futuristic, dystopian version of London, following a rogue MI5 agent on a mission to avenge injustice. The project’s working titleRobin Hood 2058is believed to change at some point, but the site didn’t reveal what the replacement title may be. Despite the massively different setting, writerTony Leerevealed that he plans on staying faithful to the original source material. Regardless of what the story is, there are several otherRobin Hoodprojects in development at different studios.
Lionsgate hasRobin Hood: Originsin pre-production, withTaron Egerton(Robin Hood),Eve Hewson(Maid Marian) andJamie Foxx(Little John) set to star. The plot has been said to be quite gritty in tone, with some comparing it toChristopher Nolan’sThe Dark Knight. Production was originally scheduled to begin in February, but that caused a conflict withTaron Egerton’s sequelKingsman 2, which has been set for release on July 15, 2025. The young actor will now shootKingsman 2first, before going directly intoRobin Hood: Originsin either late summer or early fall.
Disney is developingNottingham & Hood, written byBrandon Barker, which is described as a revisionist take on the Robin Hood legend. The project is said to have the same tone as the studio’sPirates of the Caribbeanfranchise, which the studio intends to spawn a franchise from. Sony Pictures also acquired a Robin Hood pitch in October from writers Cory Goodman (The Last Witch Hunter) andJeremy Lott(Lore), after a heated bidding war between Sony, Paramount and Working Title Films. That project will set up a Marvel-style shared universe, with the intention to launch a franchise with several different movies focusing on each of Robin Hood’s band of merry men.
Tony Leeis a relative newcomer to screenwriting, but he previously worked on iconic comic books such as Spider Man, Doctor Who, Star Trek and MacGyver. He currently has a number of projects in development such asCarteland a remake of The Thirty Nine Steps. He also has a three-picture deal with U.K.-based Boxfly Pictures.
