On Wednesday, a crowdfunding campaign waslaunched byFireflystarsNathan FillionandAlan Tudykfor their new web series entitledCon Man. The actors/producers set a goal of $425,000 to produce at least three episodes, and fans have responded in record-breaking ways. In just under two days,Con Manhas received more than $1.6 million, which ensures that at least 11 episodes will be produced. The campaign passed the $1 million mark in less than 24 hours, and has set records for both the highest-funded web series within 24 hours, and the highest-funded web series of all time.
If the series reaches its ultimate goal of $1.75 million, two more episodes will be produced, bringingSeason 1to 13 episodes, one of which will be a complete episode of the sci-fi “show-within-a-show” entitledSpectrum.Con Mancenters on Wray Nerely (Alan Tudyk), the pilot on theSpectrumsci-fi series that was beloved by fans but cancelled way before its time, leading to the show picking up a cult following. While Wray still struggles to find his big break, his co-star Jack Moore (Nathan Fillion) went on to become a major celebrity.
The show follows Wray as he visits sci-fi conventions and comic book stores, exploring the bizarre happenings at these events as Wray learns to love and embrace his fans. Of course,Con Manessentially mirrors the plight of bothNathan FillionandAlan Tudykthemselves. After starring in the beloved but short-livedFirefly,Nathan Fillionbecame a household name on ABC’sCastle, which is currently in its seventh season, whileAlan Tudykhas had a less prolific career in both film and TV.
Con Manalready has a number of confirmed guest stars such asSean Maher,Gina Torres,James Gunn,Seth Green,Felicia Day, andAmy Acker.Alan Tudykis writing, directing and starring in the series, whileNathan Fillionwill produce and co-star.PJ Haarsmais also producing the series, which will premiere on Vimeo sometime this summer.
