Star Warsfans have always been a vocal group, whether it’s expressing their admiration for the franchise, or addressing its flaws. After the prequel trilogy ended in 2005 withStar Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, some didn’t think we’d ever see anotherStar Warsmovie again, untilGeorge Lucassold off his entire LucasFilm empire for $4 billion to Disney back in 2012. The result of that sale wasStar Wars: The Force Awakens, which recently took downAvatar’s record to become the highest-grossing movie ever at the domesticbox office. With two more movies and three spinoffs coming, a new petition has surfaced, askingGeorge Lucasto come back and directStar Wars: Episode IX.
Of course,Star Wars: Episode IXalready has a director, withJurassic WorldfilmmakerColin Trevorrowtaking the helm. But, the fan who started this petition,Yuri Luizof São Paulo, Brazil, thinks the filmmaker just “isn’t right” to tackle the last movie in this new trilogy. Here’s whatYuri Luizhad to say on hisChange.orgpetition page, which is addressed directly to Disney, LucasFilm and LucasFilm presidentKathleen Kennedy.

“We have no problem withColin Trevorrow, but he’s not the right guy to directStar Wars: Episode IX.George Lucasas director of Episode IX would be the perfect way to end this new trilogy and make an epic farewell between the Father ofStar Warsand the whole universe of the galaxy far, far away… We would like to see him again involved with the franchise. Thank you so much.”
The petition currently has 2,645 signatures, but even if they do get much more, it doesn’t seem likely thatGeorge Lucaswill come back. He has said in multiple interviews that Disney didn’t want to use his ideas for the new trilogy, even going so far as comparing the studio towhite slavers. The filmmaker did end up apologizing, but it still doesn’t seem likely that the director and Disney will work together.

Star Wars: The Force Awakensrecently brokeAvatar’s all-time domesticbox officerecord, which had stood for six years. Disney has five more movies in the works, hitting theaters over the next five years, and it doesn’t seem likely thatGeorge Lucaswill be involved with any of those projects. Do you thinkGeorge Lucasshould come back forStar Wars: Episode IX? Or is the franchise better off without him?
