SPOILER WARNING: There are SPOILERS in this story for Evil Dead Rise
Evil Dead Risehas made its way to movie theaters, resurrecting theEvil Deadfranchise in a very successful way. The film is performing well in theaters, having moved its release to the big screen following positive test screenings. The film had originally been in development for a streaming release on HBO Max, but even withoutBruce Campbellstarring as Ash Williams,Evil Dead Risequickly proved to be a hit with horror fans.
Previously, writer-directorLee Cronindivulged that Campbell was in fact secretly in the film, leaving it up to viewers to find the Easter egg. They would soon enough, as this was in the form of a vocal cameo by Campbell. It happens when one of the new characters, Beth (Lily Sullivan), discovers a recording of a man warning others about the dangers of the Deadites, arguing that the Necronomicon was “called the Book of the Dead for a reason!” Fans may recognize that voice, as it’s none other than Campbell, but as the recording is a century old, most may presume that this is Campbell playing a different character rather than franchise mainstay Ash Williams.
Not so fast, Cronin says. In an interview withInsider, Cronin speaks about the Campbell cameo. Cronin teases that the voice on the recording is “potentially” Ash Williams after all. The character clearly knows a thing or two about Deadites, as he warns the others, not to mention howArmy of Darknesshas already established how Ash has experience in time travel. It very well could be that Ash’s further Deadite-slaying adventures have placed him in 1923, where his voice had been recorded for Beth to find a hundred years later. As Cronin says:
“There is a Bruce Campbell cameo, and that cameo potentially is actually Ash Williams. Think about how time works for Ash as a character, and that voice that you may hear is captured on something that was recorded 100 years ago. And the fact that his particular line is a warning showcases somebody that knows more than the other people in the room… I know that sounds very cryptic, but it’s supposed to.”
