Warlords (2007)

Warlordsis a 2007 historical epic that doesn’t shy away from traditional warfare. Jet Li, Andy Lau, and Takeshi Kaneshiro play a trio of men inan unbreakable brotherhoodas the onset of the Taiping Rebellion threatens the Qing dynasty. Though their bond may seem unbreakable, the surrounding war and political discourse may threaten their long-lasting friendship – as well as their very lives.

Warlordsis fairly straightforward when compared to similar films of the time, albeit with a surprising amount of depth when it comes to our protagonist’s motivations. The emotional core found in our developed characters coalesces with the film’s grim setting and wide scope. Combined with someespecially violent battles,Warlordsis a film that justifies its immense scale.

Scott Adkins has delivered many jaw-dropping, and blood-pumping fight scenes during his vast action movie career, and here are his best.

Curse of the Golden Flower (2006)

Curse of the Golden Flower

You can always count on the wuxia genre to deliver a grandiose martial arts film. This is made incredibly apparent with 2006’sCurse of the Golden Flower, a wuxia epic directed by Zhang Yimou. Set in the midst ofChina’s Tang dynasty, the Emperor (Chow Yun Fat) and his royal family find themselves caught in the middle of political and romantic battles before a series of morbid surprises leads to a bloody rebellion.

Praise forCurse of the Golden Flowerhas been aimed squarely at its production values. Its interior sets andhistorical costume designsare downright gorgeous to look at, made all the more impressive by the complex story woven around them. Of course, a simple plot synopsis does a great disservice to something as complex asCurse of the Golden Flower. If you’re interested in a fight-filled historical epic, this is a terrific movie to check out.

Under Siege (1992)

Under Siege

While Steven Seagal is a controversial figure in the martial arts community – to put things mildly – most will agree that his 1992 filmUnder Siegeis thepeak of Seagal’s career. It, along with several other films of his likeOut for Justice, will be hitting Tubi in November. The film sees Seagal playing a former Navy SEAL as he takes on a dangerous new assignment: cooking for a special occasion on the USS Missouri battleship. However, when a group of terrorists takes over the ship, Seagal’s specialized talents will be put to the test as their lone opposition.

With a villainous lead played by Tommy Lee Jones,Under Siegeis easily one of the most beloved films in Seagal’s lengthy filmography. Along with nabbing a pair of Academy Award nominations,Under Siegewould also act as the single most commercially and critically successful film in Segal’s prolific career.
