The new fantasy adventure movieDungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieveshas gotten a lot of love with its world premiere screening. Based on the popular role-playing game, theDungeons & Dragonsfilm screened for critics and festival goers at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival in Austin, Texas. The subsequent reviews from the Rotten Tomatoes-approved critics on hand have resulted in unanimous praise and a 100% score for the film, a stark contrast to the previous live-actionD&Dmovie that was released in 2000.
“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieveshas arrived at SXSW’s Opening Night, and it’s the kind of epic fun fans have been waiting for,” writes Kristy Puchko ofMashable.
“It captures the joy of failing, running away, and coming up with a great solution that somehow just works, which is the real experience of any goodD&Dcampaign,” theAustin Chronicle’s Richard Whittaker says in his review.
Ahead of the premiere, the directors of the film said that the moviewasn’t “just for nerds,“stressing that they wantedHonor Among Thievesto appeal to everyone. That is holding true for the critics with the SXSW screening, as it’s noted that fans and those unfamiliar with the RPG alike will be entertained by the movie.
“An adaptation that will appeal to the nostalgic side of existing fans and entertain those whose eyes glaze over at the mention of Dungeon Masters, bards or druids,” as Lovia Gyarkye ofTHRputs it, calling the film an “accessible” adaptation.
Or as Kate Sanchez ofBut Why Tho?writes, “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thievesis a good heist film. A good fantasy film. A good adventure. And above all else, a good D&D film.”
