In 2019, Hiccup and Toothless said goodbye. Toothless then led all the dragons away and into the hidden world beneath the sea. The film ends on a bittersweet note. While the vikings pass down the knowledge of dragons for generations, they will continue to stay hidden until “we” are ready. Thus, the world of Dreamworks’How to Train Your Dragonseries came to an end, a series that spawned a film trilogy, shorts,and multiple television and streaming series.

Or was it truly the end? EnterDreamworks Dragons: The Nine Realms.A show that takes place in a time period close to our own, 1,300 years after the events ofHow to Train Your Dragon. The show follows a group of kids whose parents are all assigned to Project ICARIS, which is meant to study the Rift, a mysterious crack in the earth. What starts out as a boring move to an isolated wooded area turns into the discovery of a lifetime.

Jeremy Shada as Tom Kullerson

Bold, adventurous, and impulsive, Tom Kullerson truly is a dragon rider by nature. Upon first coming to the Rift, Tom was already up for all the new changes of the big move. When he first encounters a dragon, instead of running, Tom has to brave the unknown. Though Tom isn’t without his soft side, he’s always looking out for his friends, be they scaley or soft.

Because of this, Tom became the leader of the new generation of dragon riders. Later on it’s revealed that, surprise surprise, Tom is a descendant of Hiccup. This gives Tom even more of a drive to search the Rift, and eventually the Nine Realms below, and figure out the key to his past.

Jun is the second to earn her own dragon, and she had a bit of growing up in order to do so. Jun has a major fascinationwith mythology and spiritualism, which at first lands her in some hot (and cold) water. Whenever she faces a challenge, Jun likes to look to charts, tarot card readings, and the stories of old to guide her way.

Sometimes it helps, sometimes it makes the situation worse, but it works for her and that’s what matters. She becomes a valuable member of the team because of her knowledge of dragons, especially when she manages to tame her own dragon(s) Wu and Wei.

D’Angelo Baker from Dragons: The Nine Realms

Jun is voiced byAshley Liao, who is known for playing Lola Wong inFuller Houseas well as Simone inPhysical.

Marcus Scribner as D’Angelo Baker

D’Angelo Baker is the third member of the dragon riders. Originally recruited when Tom and Jun discover an injured dragon. D’Angelo is a kid with a lot of conflict at home, with a hard-headed military dad who is hoping to follow in his footsteps. But even with his own rough exterior, D’Angelo is a big softie on the inside and prefers to heal rather than harm. Later on in the series he becomes the first dragon veterinarian, all thanks to his first patient and dragon companion, Plowhorn.

D’Angelo is played byMarcus Scribner, who is best known for playing Andrew “Junior” Johnson inBlack-ishas well as Bow inShe-Ra and the Princesses of Power.

Alex Gonzalez from Dragons: The Nine Realms

Shy, yet spunky, Alex is the tech-girl of the dragon riders. Unlike the others, Alex prefers to face problems at her own pace and in an atmosphere where she can have room to breathe and think.

Usually, she’s seen with her trusty tablet that she uses to get the riders out of various jams, whether it’s recording a dragon call, hacking into the Project ICARIS security systems, or anything else. Don’t let her shyness fool you, Alex doesn’t take any lip, and is usually the one to dish out a jab whenever somebody rushes in without thinking. Her dragon is Feathers, who matches her personality to a T.

Eugene Wong from Dragons: The Nine Realms

Alex is voiced byAimee Garcia, who has a long history in both film and television. From Jamie Batista inDexterto Ella Lopez inLucifer, chances are you recognize this actress.

Vincent Tong as Eugene Wong

The final member of the dragon riders, Eugene Wong is the brother of Jun Wong, but the two couldn’t be any more different. Initially introduced as a foe and foil to the riders, Eugene eventually discovers the world of dragons in Season 3. He then bonds with a dragon of his very own, which he names Webmaster. Eugene is cocky, abrasive, and always putting his own foot in his mouth. While he has been growing more mature since getting accepted into the dragon riders, he still has a long way to go.

Julia Stiles as Olivia Kullerson

Olivia Kullerson is Tom’s mother and geologist of Project ICARIS. As a single mom, she often has a hard time balancing work life and family life. While she’s adventurous like her son, she’s also less likely to question authority and tries to look before she dives into something.

Olivia is voiced by award-winning actressJulia Stiles. Starting with her first film role, 1996’sI Love You, I Love You Not, Stiles has starred in numerous film and television roles. Teen films such as10 Things I Hate About Youwere what helped her rise to stardom. Her most current role is in the Amazon seriesThe Lake, in which she plays Maisy-May.

Haley Joel Osment as Leonard “Buzzsaw” Burne

The primary antagonist of the series, Buzzsaw is a guy with lots of internal trouble. He was first introduced in Season 2 as the owner of a local lumber company. But when a great fire burns down the family business, Buzzsaw wrongfully blames Thunder and vows revenge.

Buzzsaw is voiced by none other thanHaley Joel Osment, who rose to fame afterstarring inThe Sixth Sense. Afterward, his career only grew, and he went on to star in numerous films such asSecondhand Lions,A.I. Artificial Intelligence, and much more. He is also very well known for voicing Sora in the “Kingdom Hearts” videogame franchise. His next film is the upcoming thrillerPussy Island.

Carrie Keranen as Wilma Sledkin

The secondary antagonist of the series, Wilma is another scientist who has a hard rivalry with Olivia. She is always looking for ways to discredit Olivia’s work and data, even if it means putting herself or others in harms way.

Wilma is voiced byCarrie Keranen, a longstanding voice actress for both anime and western shows. Fans ofAh! My Goddess!would recognize her as Lind and Hikari the Flash, she also provided the voice of Mami Tomoe inPuella Magi Madoka Magica. Her most recent voicework was in the Netflix film,Ladybug & Cat Noir: The Movie, in which she reprised her role as Alya Césaire.

Keston John as Philip Baker

Father of D’Angelo and chief of security at Project ICARIS, Phillip is all about safety. He takes his job very seriously, even if it means he has to come off as the bad guy for the kids. But deep down, he loves his son to the moon and back.

Philip is played byKeston John, whose voice work ranges from Tiger Dude inWe Baby Bearsto Neb’s Spirit inDragon Age: Absolution. He also played the role of TarseminAvatar: The Way of Water.

Lauren Tom as May Wong

Director of Project ICARIS and mother of Jun and Eugene, May runs a tight shift. She expects the best from her children, as well as her crew. Often she can be found either assigning chores to Jun or Eugene or scolding the other members of ICARIS.

May is voiced byLauren Tom, whose works go back toThe Facts of Life, where she played Miko Wakamatsu. From there, she played on numerous shows such asGrace Under Fire,The Nanny,Friends, and more. She’s no stranger to the world of voice acting either, and has lent her voice to shows like Superman: The Animated Series, Rocket Power, and even the eerily cheerful Joo Dee inAvatar: The Last Airbender. Most recently she voiced Leader Lois inMy Adventures with Superman.
