Marvel is about to go full-steam ahead on their marketing campaign for their latest movieDoctor Strange. We have already seen a teaser trailer and a few official posters for the next entry in the MCU, but in the next week we are very likely to get a whole lot more. Kevin Feige and the gang are bringingDoctor StrangetoSan Diego Comic-Conthis weekend, and they have dropped a brand new theatrical poster ahead of what will likely be one of the highlights of the entire convention.
The latest poster has been showing up in certain movie theaters and even though Marvel has yet to release a high resolution version of it, it has made its way ontoTwitter. The first couple of theatrical posters were a bit more of a tease, but this new look showcasesBenedict Cumberbatchas The Sorcerer Supreme in all of his glory, front and center. The background of the poster is still showcasing the Sanctum Sanctorum, which was also featured in the other posters we have seen. But this is definitely the best look atDoctor Strangein costume we have seen so far.
Marvel Studios is bringing several of their upcoming movies to San DiegoComic-Conthis year, including the highly anticipatedGuardians of the Galaxy 2andSpider-Man: Homecoming. There is no doubt that much of the focus of the studios panel on Saturday at SDCC will be onDoctor Strange, because he is a brand new character, and a very different one at that. Even many hardcore comic book fans only have a passing knowledge of the character, so Marvel Studios is definitely going to want to sell the larger audience on the premise and the character, who it seems will be a big part of the MCU moving forward. Here is the official synopsis forDoctor Strange.
“Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeonDoctor Stephen Strangewho, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.”
Doctor Strangewill be a very different kind of Marvel movie, with horror directorScott Derricksondirecting, and it will be introducing straight up magic into the MCU. Up till now, only vaguelymystical elementshave been introduced, via theThormovies mostly. Not only that, but the source material is like nothing we have seen before and though the movie has clearly taken a lot from the comics, things had to be toned down a bit. The original comics were very much a product of their era, and are very psychedelic and perhaps even over-the-top, and probably wouldn’t make for good, mass appeal if it were taken straight from the page to the screen.
Fans can probably expect a brand new, full-length trailer forDoctor Strange, as well as some morestory and character details, to be revealed during SDCC this weekend. Hopefully the studio will release the trailer for the general public as well, which seems likely because the release date for the movie is fast approaching, and they want to get people as excited as possible.Doctor Strangeis set for release on November 4. Be sure to check out the brand new theatrical poster for yourself below.
