Scott Derrickson will be returning to the world of R-rated horror in the relatively near future. The filmmaker has revealed that, once he’s done withDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he’s going to be making a new horror movie with his writing partner C. Robert Cargill. Not just any horror movie, mind you. The two are adapting one of author Joe Hill’s stories for the big screen.
The reveal was made byScott Derricksonon Twitter. He got his start in horror, directing movies likeThe Exorcism of Emily RoseandSinisterbefore landing the gig directingDoctor Strangefor Marvel Studios. In a tweet, Derrickson explained that he’s often asked about a possible return to R-rated horror, at which point he revealed that those plans are already well underway. Here’s what he had to say about it.
“I’m often asked if I’ll everreturn to R-rated horror. The answer is a resounding Yes. After Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness, I’ll go straight into a horror film I’ve already written with C. Robert Cargill.”
C. Robert Cargillpreviously partnered with Scott Derrickson on 2012’sSinister, which was produced by Blumhouse and went on to become a big hit. The two have also worked together on bothDoctor Strangemovies and have developed quite the creative partnership. Cargill also added a bit to the news in a tweet of his own by revealing that it is indeed going to be a Joe Hill story they’re tackling.
“Man, thanks for all the love, you guys. Scott Derrickson and I have been sitting on this secret for a while, but we’re super excited about it. Can’t wait to make it. Might as well also tell you that it’s anadaptation of a Joe Hill joint. Everything else we gotta keep quiet ATM”
Joe Hill, authorofLocke & KeyandNOS4A2and the son of Stephen King, has a wealth of stories to pull from. The previously mentioned titles have already been adapted, with Scott Derrickson originally attached to direct the first episode of theLocke & KeyTV series before things shifted to Netflix. Without any further information, it’s tough to even begin to speculate which story they might be taking on, but Hill has plenty of material that would make for good R-rated horror in the right hands.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessis expected to shoot next year and is being billed as the first horror movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on June 12, 2025, which means Derrickson is going to be busy for the next year and a half.
