Antoine Fuquaand one of his favorite actors, Academy Award-winner,Denzel Washingtonwill team-up once again for the director’s next big project for Netflix.

Now thatthe actors' strike has finally come to an end after 118 daysand weeks of negotiation between SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP, several of the films and series that were on hiatus are beginning to reveal news regarding their casts and filming. Fuqua’s next movie is one of them. A few months after the premiere of his latest title,The Equalizer 3, the acclaimed director confirmed his next project that will reunite him with the star of the action saga.

Deadlinebroke the news on Monday that Washington has been cast as the ancient Carthaginian general Hannibal in the film, which currently has no title. The script will be written by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan, who wrote great titles such asGladiator,The Aviator,Hugo, andSpectreamong many others. The outlet also shared an official description of the movie:

“The film covers the pivotal battles he led against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War.”

Fuqua and Washington first worked together on the classic crime thrillerTraining Day, and reunited onThe Magnificent, and the three installments of the popular action franchiseThe Equalizer, whose latest installment was released earlier this year. The film, as well as the two previous ones, was very well received.

Last year, Fuqua teamed up with another streaming platform, Apple TV for the historical dramaEmancipation, starring Will Smith. Washington, for his part, had taken a brief break after releasing three films in 2021,The Little Things,The Tragedy of Macbeth, andA Journal for Jordan.

Denzel Washington Will Be Part of Another Epic Story

Hannibal will not be the only character related to the ancient history of humanity that the great actor will play soon. In 2024, he will be part of the cast ofthe long-awaited sequel toGladiator, with Ridley Scott again directing, and a great cast led by Paul Mescal as Lucius, a character introduced in the first installment.

Joining them will be returning stars Connie Nielsen as Lucilla, Djimon Hounsou as Juba, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn as co-emperor Caracalla, Fred Hechinger as co-emperor Geta, May Calamawy, Lior Raz, Peter Mensah, and Matt Lucas among others. The movie is set to hit theaters on November 22, and was one of the projects that had to pause filming due to the actors' strike, but is expected to resume filming soon to warp up, since there were only a few days left of filming.

At the moment, no details have been revealed regarding the plot ofGladiator 2, nor the role that Washington will be playing in it, although it is expected to be a storyfull of action and emotionlike the first part, one of the most successful films in Scott’s career.
