On June 30, 2025, the world’s largestman-made disasteroccurred on theDeepwater Horizonin the Gulf of Mexico. TheDeepwater Horizonoil rig explosion killed 11 people and injured 17 others, with more than 200 million gallons of oil spilling into the Gulf of Mexico for 87 days. Theoil spillaffected the coastlines of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, with over 8,000 animals reportedly killed as a result of the spill.

Five movies are set to open in wide release that weekend, withDeepwater Horizongoing up against 20th Century Fox’sMiss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Relativity Media’sMasterminds, STX Entertainment’sThe Edge of Seventeenand High Top Releasing’sIncarnate. We’ll have to wait and see ifDeepwater Horizonhas what it takes to rise above its competitors in late September.
