Ryan Reynolds has been named one ofGQ’s sexiest men of the year, despite the actor having to wear prosthetic burn make-up and a mask for nearly 90% of his blockbuster hitDeadpool. Along with these honors comes an extensive interview, where theDeadpool 2star broke down the production process behind the original movie and its sequel. And he admits that the first movie nearly killed him.
Shortly after Deadpool wrapped,Ryan Reynoldshad a complete mental breakdown. Which makes sense, as theMarvel superheromovie was in development for nearly 11 years, and it all came with a lot of baggage. If Ryan Reynolds and his team failed, it would come with dire consequences. About that, Reynolds reveals this.
“I felt like I was on some schooner in the middle of a white squall the whole time. It just never stopped. When it finally ended, I had a little bit of a nervous breakdown. I literally had the shakes. I went to go see a doctor because I felt like I was suffering from a neurological problem or something. And every doctor I saw said, ‘You have anxiety.’ "
Ryan Reynolds originally appeared inX-Men Origins: Wolverine, where he debuted as the Merc with the Mouth Wade Wilson. Not only were fans disappointed in the movie, so was the actor. And he spent the next decade trying to revive theX-Men mutant. The whole process was very hard on his nervous system. He says this.
“I was banging the loudest drum for Deadpool. I wasn’t just trying to open it; I was trying to make a cultural phenomenon.”
Ryan Reynolds says that the movie’s immense success has delivered a sense of satisfaction and a ‘certain vindication’. He goes onto say this.
“[Especially] because the studio, granted, under different regimes, for years just kept telling us to go f- ourselves sterile.”
Ryan Reynolds is currently working onDeadpool 2. Though it hasn’t been without its problems despite the first movie’s success. Director Tim Miller bailed over creative differences with Reynolds, who got a huge pay raise for the sequel and more creative control.
