The firstConstantinefilm, which released back in 2005, debuted to widespread acclaim from classic comic fans, Keanu fans, and those who just love a more low-key yet well-crafted, entertaining spin on the supernatural and demonic. The film didn’t allude itself much at all as a story with comic origins, focusing on limited special effects perfectly mixed with a balance of action, drama, wit and just enough fantasy to intrigue the audience. Fresh off of Reeves' notoriety from theMatrixfranchise,Constantinegained a sort of sleeper hit icon status that has held up through the years and now among several dozen other big budget comic films.
As it turns out, Keanu Reeves also remained a hardcore fan of his demonic detective character, and actually pushed Warner Bros literally every single year since the release of the first film to make a sequel. While it took the studio obviously quite some time to be convinced, Reeves' dream ultimately came true and the sequel is officially set to be a part of DC’s new universe. Fellow actor Peter Stormare, who played the role of Lucifer in the first movie and is confirmed to reprise the character in the sequel, has expressed both his excitement andconcernabout making the follow-up film so many years later, but it’s likely safe to say that at least all the fans of original will flood the theaters forConstantine 2’s debut.

Constantine 2is currently in production under returning director Francis Lawrence, with no release date announced yet.
Where Will Constantine’s Story Fall Within DC’s New Universe?
With James Gunn taking the wheel on DC’s complete revamp, having since announced the first lineup of at least a dozen projects to be part of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, yet another big question looms. Considering that John Constantine is a classic DC character who obviously hasn’t had a big-screen presence in quite some time, where exactly does he and his story fall within Gunn’s new universe? Given his previous connection to the character and story of Swamp Thing, which Gunn already plans to turn into a feature film, it’s likely safe to say that Constantine will find a place somewhere within the main canon, rather than in the sub-universe of “DC Elseworlds”.
