J.J. Abramspulled a fast one on us all earlier this year when it was revealed that a movie originally known asThe Cellarwas actually the long awaited sequel toCloverfield. Well, at least it was a movie that took place in the same universe. But10 Cloverfield Lanewas just the first of these newCloverfieldmovies. Next year’s sci-fi thrillerGod Particlewas recently revealed to also be part of this newCloverfield cinematic universe, if you will. Now starDavid Oyelowohas opened up a bit about it.

The actor was recently interviewed byThe Wrapabout the project, which on paper, seems very similar to another sci-fi movie he starred in recently.David Oyelowowas also inInterstellar, a movie that also takes place in space. But according toOyelowo, the similarities between that movie andGod Particle, orCloverfield 3if you will, largely begin and end there. Here is what he had to say.

“The only connection I would say is both films involve space and both films involve me. That’s about as much connection I can see between the two.

With that out of the way, we can look at what exactlyGod Particleis. The movie is described via a brief synopsis as being “about a team of astronauts who make a ‘shocking discovery’ and end up fighting for survival in what is described as an altered reality.” There is no doubt that “shocking discovery” will have something to do with monsters or aliens or something that loosely links it to the events of bothCloverfieldand10 Cloverfield Lane. Maybe this altered reality they discover is where the monsters/aliens come from? Sort of a prequel to the other two movies? We don’t know, but here is whatDavid Oyelowowas able to say about it.

“Every single day we were on that set we were agog with the inventiveness and innovation, between the technology, the story and the audacity of what we were trying to accomplish. It’s an incredibly exciting and innovative piece of storytelling. It’s incredibly surprising.”

Part of what has made theseCloverfield movieswork is the element of surprise, so it isn’t a shock thatDavid Oyelowocouldn’t get overly specific. It is hard not to be interested in what he had to say though when applying it to the synopsis and putting that against the backdrop of theCloverfield universe. The plan right now is for Paramount and Bad Robot to release a newCloverfieldmovie every year, which started with10 Cloverfield Laneand will continue withGod Particlenext year. This could wind up being like a cinematic version of a monster-centric, sci-fi skewedThe Twilight Zoneproduced byJ.J. Abrams.

What is perhaps most interesting about these newCloverfieldmovies is that they will give up-and-coming directors a chance to make their mark. The originalCloverfieldhelped breakMatt Reevesinto the world of features andDan Trachtenbergproved what he was capable of with10 Cloverfield Lane. This time around,Julius Onahwill show us what he can do withGod Particle. The movie starsZiyi Zhang,Elizabeth Debicki,Daniel BruhlandChris O’Dowdand is scheduled to hit theaters on February 24th, 2017.
