Nolan adapted the epic poem, originally written by Homer around the 8th or 7th BC, and is about Odysseus, who is the King of Ithaca, as he makes a dangerous and long journey home following the end of the Trojan War. Experts considerThe Odysseyto be one of the oldest pieces of literature which is still read and performed to this day. The first English translation was in the 16th century and many students around the world have read it andThe Illiad, also by Homer, while in school.

‘The Odyssey’ Promises a Big-Budget Epic Adaptation

Last year, Nolan won his first Best Director Oscar forOppenheimeralong with Best Picture, and fans were surprised to learn what his follow-up film would be. And given the director’s track record, it goes without question thatThe Odysseywill be just as epic as most of his films.

Nolan and his crew prefer to use as many practical effects, stunts, and sets as they can, and arecent reportsaid that the monstrous Cyclops won’t be a CGI creation. Instead, a nearly 20-foot-tall practical Cyclops puppet has been created for which Odysseus and his men will fight. The crew is also filming in Greece’s historic Nestor’s Cave and are using extra steps to ensure the cave isn’t damaged. Insider ‘NolanAnalyst’ on X / Twitter explained:

“A 6x6m mechanical anthropomorphic puppet will be built inside Nestor’s Cave. The installation will be temporary, fully reversible, and constructed with portable materials to avoid any damage to the site. Special precautions, like geotextile and sand layers, will be used to protect the cave.”

Additionally,The Odysseywill also feature the famous Trojan Horse, which is also a gigantic practical creation, among other massive sets. It’s refreshing that Nolan and his crew stick to practical effects as much as possible, given the over-reliance on CGI in modern movies.

Shogun

Once filming in Morocco and Greece has finished, the production will move to Sicily. The film’s budget is reported to be $250 million, making it the most expensive film Nolan has directed. Given the film’s epic nature, it would be highly recommended to catchThe Odysseyin an IMAX theater when it opens on June 14, 2025.
