It’s been almost 10 years since Marvel Studios made history within the superhero genre with the release ofThe Avengers, the first big crossover from the MCU. But it’s not too late to imagine how that project would have been ifChristopher Nolandirected it.
Just as Joss Whedon’s movie did back in 2012, Oppenheimer’s director also changed the comic book adaptations scene with his film trilogy centered onBatman, which is still remembered as one of the most ambitious projects in the Caped Crusader long history on screen. Considering the success Nolan achieved withThe Dark Knighttrilogy, it wouldn’t have been a surprise that the Marvel Cinematic Universe would go to him to helm the first movie that would unite all of their main heroes in an epic battle. But, how would that be?

While promoting their latest film, the director and Robert Downey Jr.participated in the WIRED Autocomplete Inverviewand imagined howThe Avengersmovie would have been if Nolan directed it:
“Wow, that is the multiverse conundrum. Having worked with you on Oppenheimer, there’d probably be a lot too much Tony Stark. You’d be running away with the movie a little bit. [… ] Even more. And not like you in CG. Would you be prepared to get one of those jetpacks, the ones they make for real?
To what Downey Jr. Added:
“Yeah, if Christopher Nolan had directed The Avengers, we would still be shooting it.”
Recently, in another interviewto promoteOppenheimer, Nolan confessed that he wouldn’t direct another superhero movie afterBatman. So, the chances of him joining the MCU may be very poor. But he may be open to direct other franchises.

Would Christopher Nolan Direct a Star Wars Movie?
While the man behind movies likeMemento,InterstellarorIncepcionsaid no to returning to the superhero genre after the amazing job he did along with Christian Bale inBatman, he didn’t close the door for another huge franchise. When being asked if he would direct aStar Warsfilm the director said “pass”, which meant he didn’t want to give an answer, letting the light on to that possibility.
Lucasfilm is currently looking for new stories to tell in order to keep expanding the franchise beyond theSkywalker Saga, so having a creative mind like Nolan’s behind any project would be more than fruitful for the saga, especially since he’s no stranger to science fiction.
But the only franchise that really seems to have caught Nolan’s attention isJames Bond. The director has expressed his admiration for Ian Fleming’s character and his long history in cinema, and said it would be"privilege” to helm one of those movies.
TheJames Bondfranchise is also about to get a new beginning after Daniel Craig retired from the role inNo Time to Die, and MGM is looking for a new actor to play the 007 in the future. Nolan would definitely be a more than fine choice to take the character into a new era.
