Amazon MGM Studios' Wednesday night presentation at CinemaCon 2025 was filled with plenty of new updates for upcoming films.Luca Guadagninotook the stage to talk about his newest upcoming thriller,After the Hunt, starring Ayo Edebiri and Andrew Garfield, and there was also a new look at the live-actionMasters of the Universefilm, among a myriad of other projects. One such project is the techno-thriller filmMercy, starring Chris Pratt, with a January 2026 release date.Mercyboasts an unconventional but intriguing premise, and to sell the film to attendees further, Chris Pratt recreated a part of the film on stage at CinemaCon by strapping himself onto a chair.
Timur Bekmambetov directedMercyfrom a script written by Marco van Belle, and it tells the story of a detective (Pratt) who is accused of killing his wife. Taking place in the future where capital crime runs rampant, the justice system works very differently, with Pratt’s character strapped down to a chair and forced to prove his innocence before the Mercy Capital Court. The catch is that the detective only has 90 minutes, and the Capital Court is an AI program. With such a unique setup, it’s hard not to become at least slightly curious about the upcoming project.

Pratt went up on stage at CinemaCon and sat down in the same chair as the film. Pratt told the audience, “So, check this out, this is the exact same chair we used in the movie. I spent a lot of time in this thing. It’s not the most comfortable thing in the world.” However, instead of pleading for his life and trying to prove his innocence, the actor had to thank moviegoers and exhibitors for their work in the theatrical landscape.
‘Mercy’ Looks Like an Unconventional Science Fiction Thriller
In a hilarious recreation of the footage shown to attendees, a voice-over played on the speakers told Chris Pratt that he didn’t meet the “acceptable” threshold for gratitude, at which point the actor thanked more theaters by name. Overall, it seemed like a hilarious segment duringAmazon MGM Studios’presentation and hopefully got more people excited forMercy. Combining exciting footage with a creative shout-out to exhibitors distributing and promoting movies, this presentation exemplifies everything great about CinemaCon.
Pratt would wrap up his segment by saying, “I want to thank all the exhibitors here. Thank you for all your support for this industry that we all love. Give yourselves a round of applause. I do love you, exhibitors, and I will see you at the movies on July 23, 2025.” The futuristic crime thriller is set to kick off 2026, and hopefully be the first of many box office successes next year. While that release period is infamous for being connected to poor quality or less popular studio films,Mercyseems to have an exciting enough premise to stand out.
Featuring a talented cast consisting of Rebecca Ferguson, Annabelle Wallis, Kali Reis, Chris Sullivan, Kylie Rogers, Jeff Pierre, Rafi Gavron, Jamie McBride, and Kenneth Choi,Mercyis shaping up to be an interesting sci-fi flick. With themes of AI and the procedural format being told from the perspective of Pratt’s character stuck in a chair, plenty of aspects could make the movie compelling.
