After a proposedCharmed rebootat CBS never moved forward a few years ago, it seems a different network is trying another approach. The CW, which is partially owned by CBS, has teamed up withJane the VirgincreatorJennie Snyder Urmanfor anotherCharmedreboot, with a much different twist. This series will be set in the year 1976, and will supposedly connect to the original series in some way.
The Hollywood Reporterbroke the news earlier today, although they couldn’t clarify how this new show will connect to the original series. The witch drama followed three Halliwell sisters, played byAlyssa Milano,Holly Marie CombsandShannen Doherty, who discover that they are descendants of a line of female witches. Each has a special ability (stopping time, moving objects, seeing the future), and they can also combine their abilities into the “Power of Three” to fight demons, warlocks, and other evils.Rose McGowanjoined the show in 2001, after the departure ofShannen Doherty. The series ran for eight seasons between 1998 and 2006 on The WB Network, which became The CW Network during the show’s final season.
This new story was created byJane the VirginwritersJessica O’TooleandAmy Rardinand they will both write thepilot script. The writers will also executive produce alongsideJennie Snyder Urman, Propagate Content’sBen Silverman, who also executive producesJane the Virgin, andBrad Silberling, who has directed several episodes ofJane the Virginand has been set to direct theCharmedreboot pilot episode. The project received a script commitment from The CW and was developed at CBS Television Studios, whereJennie Snyder UrmanandBrad Silberlinghave overall deals in place.
Back in March,Alyssa Milanotook to social media to clear up rumors of aCharmedreunion by stating that wasn’t happening, but that CBS was developing a reboot without any members of the original cast. She added that, with all of the “reunion shows” happening such asFuller House,Girl Meets Worldand the recently rumoredWill & Gracerevival,Alyssa Milanothought thatCharmedwould be a “great choice” if the producers chose to go in this direction, and now with this report that the show may connect to the original show, it’s possible that the Halliwell sisters may reunite on the small screen after all.
Shortly after the news broke earlier today, bothAlyssa MilanoandHolly Marie Combstook to Twitter to respond to the news, albeit in quite subtle ways.Alyssa Milanostated thatCharmedfans are the best in the world, without officially stating anything about theTV reboot, whileHolly Marie Combswould only state that, “We wish them well.” It’s possible thatHolly Marie Combs' statement could mean that she’s not involved in this project, but it’s far too early to tell at this point. Take a look atAlyssa MilanoandHolly Marie Combs' tweets about theCharmedreboot news.
