The famousTitanicsong byCeline Dionhas had a sudden reemergence in popularity, but under very unfortunate circumstances. This week, the world has been captivated by the story of OceanGate’s Titan, a submersible offering tourist trips to the Titanic wreckage site for a hefty fee. Days after the sub went missing, it was determined that it had been destroyed by a “catastrophic implosion,” likely around the time the Titan vanished on Sunday. OceanGate’s CEO and four Titanic tourists were killed in the unfortunate incident.
With some heavy coverage in the press, the situation has brought some renewed attention to the story of the Titanic. That’s led to hundreds of thousands of streams for “My Heart Will Go On,” the theme song of James Cameron’s hit filmTitanic. PerTMZ, the song has seen a huge bump on the streaming charts, getting played on Spotify more than 522,000 times since the story of the missing Titan came to its tragic end on Thursday. The numbers continue to rise on Friday as the discussion over the Titan and the Titanic continues in the press and on social media.
Included on theTitanicsoundtrack, “My Heart Will Go On” was recently given a new music video in honor of its 25th anniversary, still considered to be Dion’s signature song. It was an instant hit upon its release in 1997, having since sold more than 18 million copies worldwide. The song won the Oscar for Best Original Song with other awards including a Golden Globe, Billboard Music Award, and multiple Grammy Awards. By this point, the song is synonymous withTitanic, almost impossible to think of the movie without hearing that familiar tune.

Titanicdirector James Cameron, who has visited the Titanic himself nearly three dozen times, has also commented on the situation with the Titan’s fate. The filmmaker has been making the rounds with various TV interviews as someone who’s been heavily studying the Titanic for more than two and a half decades. In an ABC News interview, Cameron said he was struck by how the situation reminded him of the Titanic disaster in the sense that it could have been avoided if there weren’t warnings that were ignored.
“I’m struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship, and yet, he steamed up full speed into an ice field on a moonless night, and many people died as a result,” the director explained. “And for a very similar tragedy, where warnings went unheeded, to take place at the same exact site, with all the diving that’s going on all around the world, I think it’s just astonishing, it’s really quite surreal.”
