Just three months after coming aboard to star inCaptain Marvel, actressDeWanda Wisehas been forced to back out of the project, due to scheduling complications. The actress was brought on as an unspecified character in early January, just days after Netflix issued a Season 2 renewal for the hit seriesShe’s Gotta Have It, which stars DeWanda Wise as the lead character Nola Darling. The actress’Captain Marvelschedule ultimately conflicted with theShe’s Gotta Have ItSeason 2 schedule, leading to the actress backing out ofCaptain Marvel.

There is no word yet on who may replace DeWanda Wise inCaptain Marvel, or evenwhat character she’ll be playing. When DeWanda Wise joined the cast in January, no details were given about her character, or whether or not the character has any connections to Marvel comics characters. While Marvel Studios hasn’t officially announced the start of production onCaptain Marvelyet, there have been no shortage of photos from the set since late January.

Brie Larson, who was confirmed as Carol Danvers back at Comic-Con 2016, leads a cast that also includes Ben Mendelsohn, rumored to be playing the villainousYon-Rogg, Jude Law as Mar-Vell, a.k.a. Dr. Richard Lawson, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva and the returning Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, his first Marvel movie since 2015’sAvengers: Age of Ultron. This story has been confirmed to be set in the 1990s, which may or may not give fans a first look at how Nick Fury actually lost his left eye. Nick Fury has never mentioned in any MCU movie how he actually lost his eye.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck(Half-Nelson,Mississippi Grind) are directing from a script that was originally worked on by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out), which was then re-worked by Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Tomb Raider). Kevin Feige is producing with Victoria Alonso, Louis D’Esposito, Stan Lee and Jonathan Schwartz executive producing. Marvel has set a July 24, 2025 release date forCaptain Marvel, which currently has no direct competition. It will be sandwiched between 20th Century Fox’sThe Force, Lionsgate’sChaos Walkingand DreamWorks Animation’sHow to Train Your Dragon 3on July 23, 2025, and Paramount’sAmusement Parkand Universal’s untitled thriller from writer-director Jordan Peele on August 08, 2025.
