Big news, DC fans. Greg Berlanti and DC Comics are currently working on a live action TeenTitansTV series, simply titledTitans, that will debut next year. Casting has been underway, but they just locked down the most important role. The Boy WonderDick Grayson is going to be played byPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Talesstar Brenton Thwaites.
The news comes courtesy ofThe Hollywood Reporterwho state that Brenton Thwaites has locked down the role and will appear as Dick Grayson, aka Robin, aka Nightwing, inTitans. Most people know Dick Grayson asBatman’s sidekickRobin whose parents were murdered, leading to him fighting crime alongside his more famous mentor.Titansis set to air on DC’s upcoming digital content service that has yet to be named but will arrive next year. THR’s report also gave us a brief synopsis for the upcoming series, which sounds like what one would expect from an adaptation of TeenTitans.
“Titansis a live-action drama series that follows a group of young soon-to-be superheroes recruited from every corner of the DC Universe. The story revolves around Dick Grayson, who emerges from the shadows to become the leader of a fearless band of new heroes, including Starfire (Anna Diop), Raven (Teagan Croft) and more.”
This is a huge deal. Even though this isn’t a movie within the DCEU, this is possibly going to be the first live-action version of Robin we’ve seen in a long time. The last time was a total disaster, as it was Chris O’Donnell in Joel Schumacher’s much-malignedBatman & Robinin 1997. Truly, we’ve never seen Robin done justice in live-action and now Brenton Thwaites has a chance to get it done. It is also important to note that this report mentions Robin and Dick Grayson by name, but not Nightwing. So it is still a little unclear as to which hero is going to appear in the show. DC head Geoff Johns had this to say about the casting of Thwaites in a statement.
“Dick Grayson is one of the most important and iconic heroes in theDC Universe, and it wasn’t easy to find him but we have. Brenton has the emotional depth, heart, danger and physical presence of Batman’s former protege and theTitans' future leader. We’re extremely lucky he’s chosen to bring his talents to this project and this character.”
Titansis going to be one of two very anticipated shows to debut on this as-of-yet unnamedDC streaming service, alongsideYoung Justiceseason 3. As for Brenton Thwaites, this is a major win for him, assuming the series lives up to the already building hype. He has been in some big movies, like this summer’sPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, as well as movies likeThe GiverandMaleficent, but he has been overshadowed in most projects he has been in. As the leader of DC’s young superhero team, he is going to be front-and-center inTitansand will get his day in the sun.
