Horror movies are well known for having the slightest hint of success and using that to churn out a hastily made sequel within a very short time. This has seen the likes ofSaw, Paranormal Activity, and others appearing year after year to ever-decreasing returns. Although Blumhouse has been caught in this trap before, they seem to have learned a lesson with January hitM3GANand are not attempting to fast-track the sequel,M3GAN 2.0.

While discussing the success ofM3GANwithEmpire Online, Blumhouse CEOJason Blumlaid out the plans forM3GAN 2.0, which he said would be something that would take its time and not be rushed out. According to the CEO:

m3gan

“We’ve got to write a script. I mean, you’ve gotta give us a little bit of time. The creative process suffers when you [rush]. You pretend you’re not making compromises, but you always do. So I wanted to give us enough time to make the movie great, and we have that now. And we have the whole team coming back, we’re not having to hire a writer or director – all those people are in place.”

The fact thatM3GAN 2.0is not slated to be released until January 2025 speaks volumes about how the sequel’s production is not following the regular horror trend of having a quick turnaround within a year. WithM3GANhaving a mostly positive reaction, the slower follow-up production can only mean good things for those who enjoyed the killer android’s antics the first time.

M3GAN Blew Away Box Office Projections, Even Breaking Avatar 2’s Daily Box Office Dominance

While it was unlikely that a movie which seemed on the surface to be avariation on theChuckyfranchisecould be a massive success,M3GANproved that it was its own movie. It even beatAvatar: The Way of Waterto claim the daily domestic box office on its release day. As well as bringing to life one of the creepiest takes on a “robotic friend” since the evil doll of theChild’s Playmovies,M3GANalso delivered a lesson on how technology has been integrated with parenting children, and sometimes it isn’t a good thing.

Then, of course, there was the viral dance moment that the film instigated, which certainly helped to bring the movie to the attention of millions of younger people, and saw the producers take the almost unprecedented decision to cut much of the movie’s gorier scenes, including some that had to be re-shot, to secure a PG-13 rating to allow the core audience to expand.

With the strategy clearly having a significant impact on the earning potential ofM3GAN, the sequel will likely continue to lean into this audience once again. However, for those desperate to see M3GAN wreaking havoc in all her bloody glory, Blum promised that all the gory stuff is in the unrated version of the movie, making the film the perfect double-header when it comes to profit potential.

Fans will see M3GAN return for more murderous chaos inM3GAN 2.0on June 27, 2025.
