TheBreaking Badseries finale was superb television and a fantastic way to end the popular series, but creator Vince Gilligan is feeling pretty confident that the ending of the spin-off seriesBetter Call Saulis going to be even better. AfterBreaking Badcame to an end in 2013, Gilligan expanded upon its universe by developingBetter Call Saulwith Peter Gould. Set in the years beforeBreaking Badtakes place, the spin-off has proven to be just as compelling in its own right, even without the presence of Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul.
Ahead of this month’s season 5 premiere ofBetter Call Saulon AMC, the network renewed the show for a sixth and final season to air in 2021. With the end officially in sight for the successful spin-off, fans have been speculating over how the series will end. As the show also includes flash-forward sequences showing Saul’s life as “Gene” the Cinnabon manager in the “present” as well, chances are we’ll be given some sort of closure with Jimmy McGill’s story arc in the series finale. Whatever happens, it’s going to be good, as Gilligan predicts people will be saying that the ending ofBetter Call Saulactually exceeds the finale ofBreaking Bad.
“This show is absolutely, under Peter [Gould]’s leadership, going to stick the landing. It’s going to be awesome, and The Hollywood Reporter and other wonderful journalistic outlets are going to be having articles about which one had the better ending,Breaking BadorBetter Call Saul. And I bet you folks are going to sayBetter Call Saul.”
Vince Gilligan might know what he’s talking about here. As a huge fan ofBreaking Bad, I always imagined that the explosive series would forever be impossible to top, even for a spin-off set in the same universe. And yet,Better Call Sauljust keeps getting better and better, consistently improving each season from the very start. At this point, it’s certainly on par with the quality storytelling exhibited by its parent series, and manySaulfans may say the show has in fact already surpassedBreaking Bad. Withtwo more full seasons to developthe show’s story, all of the potential is there for us to see a powerful conclusion which will leave us all speechless.
The first four seasons ofBetter Call Saularecurrently streaming on Netflix. Season 5 is also set to debut on AMC on Sunday, Feb. 23. If you’re one of thoseBreaking Badfans that never got around to checking outBetter Call Saulor abandoned it early on, hop on Netflix and give it a binge. By the time you get to season 4, the show is almost indistinguishable fromBreaking Bad, with so many of the same characters and similar levels of quality. Time will tell if Gilligan’s prediction is accurate, but I’m thinking he’ll be right. This news comes to us fromThe Hollywood Reporter.
