As many of the streaming giants continue to focus on competing with one another, Apple TV+ is continuing to focus on what really matters: quality content. With a great lineup of new shows and movies already on or coming to the app this year, it is certain to be another stellar year for them. These are some of the best movies that are going to be on the streaming service in May, and what viewers can look forward to with each one.

10Wolfwalkers

Wolfwalkers, which was released in December 2020, is still trending on Apple TV+ over two years later, with more people logging in to see it after its Oscar nomination. From stunning artwork to an incredible soundtrack, this movie left little to be desired. The story is about a young huntress befriending a girl whose spirit changes into a wolf at night, helping save her and the wolf pack that her father was contracted to exterminate. Having won many awards, it is certainly worth the watch.

CODAhas won three Oscars among other accolades, massivelyboosting Apple TV+ subscriptions. The coming-of-age story of a girl with deaf parents is the English remake ofLa Famille Bélier, a French-Belgian movie from 2014. As the girl juggles saving the family business with her goal of becoming a singer, the comedy-drama has gotten mostly positive reviews upon release. It is a film that will make viewers laugh and cry throughout the movie, and though it’s not new (as Apple TV+ isn’t releasing too many new titles in May), it’s completely deserving of a first or even second viewing.

8Fireball: Visitors From Darker Worlds

The documentaryFireball: Visitors From Darker Worldsexplores the significant impact that meteorites and their craters had on the ancient (and modern) world. From religion to culture, these fallen stars have ignited imagination and passion in humanity, and it is a common phenomenon that has spanned every continent and civilization on Earth. Giving an insider’s perspective of his writing process and personal journey, the movie also pays tribute to the music and the way it has shaped him — from basic rock ‘n’ roll to his time spent with The E Street Band. Featuring songs from the album and never-before-seen footage from behind the scenes, if fans haven’t watched it yet, then they are missing out with thisgreat music documentary.

6On The Rocks

If fans are looking for a bittersweet comedy, thenOn The Rocksis the perfect movie for them. As a young mother who struggles with doubts about her marriage, she joins forces with her father, an infamous playboy, to follow her husband around New York. As they reconnect and bond, they discover more about themselves and their insecurities than they knew they had, all while chasing her husband to attempt to catch him in the act of infidelity. Bill Murray and Rashida Jones are delightful together in Sofia Coppola’s typically distinct style.

5Boys State

The documentaryBoys Statefollows over 1,000 teenage boys as they set about the task of creating a representative government from scratch. As the film follows the high schoolers through the ups and downs of the week-long educational camp, it shows a vivid and concerning picture of how the youth in the United States think and react to a variety of real social issues. What goes from simple kids playing politics soon turns into a seat-edging mirror of the political chaos that is the American government.

Perhaps one of the most underrated movies on this list,Halafollows a teenage Muslim girl as she tries to navigate a life that balances her desires and the expectations set upon her by her family and religion. As she tests the boundaries of her sexuality and family bonds, she uncovers a secret about her parents that threatens to tear her family apart. It brilliantly shows the paradox of living in two clashing cultures and provides a look into some of the struggles that young teens go through.

3The Elephant Queen

One of the oldest movies on this list, but perfect for Mother’s Day, isThe Elephant Queen, a documentary about a family of elephants and their journey to find a new home. This inspirational film, showing the hardships that animals face in the face of drought, follows the herd’s matriarch, Athena, as she leads her family across the Savannah to a new watering hole. Narrated bythe actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, this tale of love and loss is shown beautifully on screen, depicting the lengths that mothers will go to provide for their young.

2The Velvet Underground

The Velvet Undergroundfollows the legacy of the legendary band, and the influence they had on alternative music scenes in the 1960s that can still be seen to this day. Todd Haynes' film leads viewers through the band’s history, from the time that they formed until the break-up of their original members happened in the 1970s.
