Burt Ward, the actor who played Robin in the 1960sBatmanTV series, is returning to the live-action DC universe. Ward has been confirmed to appear in this year’s highly-anticipatedArrowVersecrossover event,Crisis On Infinite Earths. Details on Ward’s exact role weren’t revealed, but the news, which dropped at San Diego Comic-Con, is sure to make hardcore DC fans rather happy.
This particular bit of DC goodness was revealed during theBatwomanpanel atSDCC. Executive Producer/writer Caroline Dries, who previously createdThe Vampire Diariesfor The CW, was on hand to discuss the show. Unfortunately, star Ruby Rose had to drop out of attending at the last second, but the show must go on. Dries, at one point while discussing this year’s crossover, revealed the news aboutBurt Ward. Here’s what she had to say.
“We’re currently working on the crossover. We’ve got a ton, a ton, a ton of characters coming into the five-part event… Burt Ward will be making an appearance [inCrisis on Infinite Earths].”
The 74-year-old actor is best known for his portrayal ofRobin the Boy Wonderon theBatmanlive-action series that debuted in 1966. Burt Ward starred alongside the late Adam West’s campy version of the Caped Crusader in the show, which ran for 120 episodes and a movie. It wasn’t stated who Ward will be playing, but one can imagine we’ll be seeing him returning to the role of Dick Grayson in some form or another. After all, it’s already been confirmed thatBrandon Routhwill be reprising his role as Superman, so why not bring Back Ward as Robin as well?
Crisis On Infinite Earthswas confirmed to be this year’s crossover following last year’sElseworldsevent. For those who may not be familiar, the title made its debut in DC Comics back in 1985 and remains one of the most famous and beloved events in the publisher’s long, storied history. The series was written by Marv Wolfman, with art from George Perez. The story centers on the Anti-Monitor, who is the other side of the coin to The Monitor, who was introduced inElseworlds. The villain aims to destroy all life across the multiverse and, on his quest, does battle with many of DC’s most famous heroes. The event is known for including the deaths of both Barry Allen and Supergirl.
Given the multiverse angle, it’s possible we could see many DC favorites from over the years pop up. This year’s ArrowVerse crossover will include all five shows,Arrow,The Flash,Supergirl,Legends of TomorrowandBatwoman, which debuts this fall. It’s expected the event will be the last time we see Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, sinceArrowis set to end with the upcoming season 8.
