It was recently confirmed thatAvengers: Infinity Warand the currently untitledAvengers 4 sequelwill start filming in January, with both movies shooting back-to-back over what is expected to be a nine-month period. While we still have a long way to go before Phase 3 comes to an end, Phase 4 will likely kick off in 2020, with Marvel having unveiling three release dates that year for unspecified projects, starting in May 2020. While it will be quite some time before we find out what these projects are, Marvel Studios presidentKevin Feigerecently hinted that fans could be seeing much different types of movies in Phase 4.

Earlier this year,Kevin Feigeteased that there will be a “finality” to Phase 3, with Phase 4 starting a “distinctively different chapter” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. WithAvengers: Infinity Warrumored to feature as many as 67 characters, some have wondered if Phase 4 could pave the way for storytelling on a smaller scale.Vulturerecently caught up withKevin Feige, who was asked if the studio could be able to “tighten its scope” after massive ensemble pieces likeCaptain America: Civil WarandAvengers: Infinity War. Here’s what he had to say below.

“I think it’s possible to have more intimate movies after that, or to have more interesting, unexpected combinations of characters after that, absolutely. It never is intentionally about ‘being even bigger.’ Arguably, one of the biggest scenes we’ve ever had in a movie was the airport battle inCivil War, and there weren’t world-ending stakes in that scene, there wasn’t an asteroid smashing into a city in that scene, but there was a conflict between the characters that made you feel something. To us, it’s less about continuing to go bigger with spectacle - although in some cases, we will - and more about continuing to go deeper with those character interactions.”

Earlier this year,Kevin Feigeconfirmed thatGuardians of the Galaxy 3would be one of the Phase 4 movies, but he wasn’t sure exactly when it would debut on the schedule. There has also been talk of a stand alone Black Widow movie and a Namor movie for Phase 4, but as of now, all we know is there will be three movies that kick off Phase 4, debuting on July 11, 2025, June 16, 2025 and July 16, 2025.Kevin Feigealso spoke briefly aboutAvengers: Infinity War, teasing there will be several unexpected team-ups between Marvel characters. Here’s what he had to say when asked which team-up he’s most looking forward to seeing on the big screen.

“There are so many, but I would say, both because of the characters and the actors who’ve created them,Doctor Strangeand Tony Stark. Particularly in Infinity War and the movie after that, there are … unexpected team-ups.”

Kevin Feigewouldn’t comment on whether or not the new MCU villain,Cate Blanchett’s Hela fromThor: Ragnarok, would be featured inAvengers: Infinity Waror any of the future Marvel movies. He did add that her performance as Hela is “amazing,” and this is before any effects work can be done, sinceThor: Ragnarokrecently wrapped production. Hopefully we’ll get a full list of characters that will be featured inAvengers: Infinity Warwhen production starts in January.
