In just a few months,Captain America: Civil WardirectorsAnthony RussoandJoe Russowill start production onAvengers: Infinity Warand their untitledAvengerssequel that will shoot back-to-back.Captain America: Civil WarstartedMarvel Phase 3, but the conflict shown in that movie is far from over, according to the directors. In fact, this summer’sCaptain America: Civil Warrepresents the start of the war, according to directorJoe Russo. Here’s what he had to say below.
“We always thought of this movie as the start of the war. It’s not over yet. At the end ofCivil WarCap drops his shield because Tony tells him he doesn’t deserve it any longer, and perhaps he doesn’t. His responsibility to himself is now in conflict with his responsibility to others, and he will struggle to resolve that. His road forward involves figuring out who Steve Rogers is without the shield.”
The Russo Brothers have teased in the past thatInfinity Warwill represent the ‘culmination’ of everything that has happened thus far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, marking the end of certain aspects of the MCU, while at the same time representing a new beginning. Now that Captain America has dropped his shield, it remains to be seen if any other character will take over as Captain America, such asSebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes orAnthony Mackie’s The Falcon. It’s impossible to know right now, since no plot details have been given and no cast members are confirmed quite yet.
TheRusso Brotherspreviously teased that there will be a whopping 67 characters inAvengers: Infinity War, although it may be quite some time before a full character list is revealed. All of the Avengers past and present are expected to surface, and it has also been confirmed that theGuardians of the Galaxywill join the fight as well. The Russo Brothers also recently let it slip thatCaptain Marvelwill come aboard, with Oscar-winning actressBrie Larsonrecently signing on to play this beloved character.
