Patrick Wilson, thestar of franchises likeThe Conjuring,InsidiousandAquaman, has commented on his potential return to the DC Studios franchise. Wilson played Orm Marius, a.k.a. Ocean Master, in the twoAquamanentries that were directed by James Wan as part of Zack Snyder’s DCEU. Now that James Gunn has taken over the franchise and turned it into the DCU, fans are curious about which previous characters – if any – might be allowed to return.
Wilson spoke to Variety on the podcastJust for Variety, where he talked about his current projects. He’s promoting his new film,Millers in Marriage, a drama written and directed by Edward Burns. However, Wilson is also pursuing a career in theatre. He’s currently co-producing a musical based on the ’80s filmThe Lost Boys, and in the past, he’s been featured in plays likeOklahoma!andThe Full Monty. The actor also used the opportunity to talk about hisAquamancharacter and whether he would reprise the role if necessary. He seems satisfied with what he did, but does this mean Wilson wouldn’t do it again if given the chance?
“Was I hoping it would be more? I don’t think so. I mean, I say this as a guy who’s done several ‘Insidious’ movies, several ‘Conjurings,’ a couple ‘Aquaman.’ It’s not like there’s a stigma to me against sequels. It’s just when you look at the structure of Orm — bad guy in the first one, basically a good guy in the second one — I don’t know where else he goes.
I wasn’t signed on for a third. There was no frustration. I don’t know where the story would go. I wouldn’t be opposed to it… It’s strange and odd and weird, and I dig that. I’m not going to lie. So, I’m happy with that ship sailing.”

Wilson’s slate is pretty busy at the moment. 2025 will see him in Noah Baumbach’s dramaJay Kelly, and he will also reprise his role as Ed Warren inThe Conjuring: Last Rites. The actor has additionally landeda starring role in the upcoming TV adaptationofCape Fear (previously adapted into a memorably gritty crime thriller by Martin Scorsese), in which he will star alongside Amy Adams and Javier Bardem.
Yes, a very busy film and TV schedule. If we add theatre, then chances are we won’t see Wilson returning to the superhero universe any time soon. However, he claims that he would give life to the Ocean Master again “if it’s worth it”:
“Would I go back to it? I mean, if it’s good. Who’s directing it? What’s the story? He’s such an odd character. I don’t know where you just drop him in. It’s so strange to me. Also, they have taken the DC Universe in a whole different way. We had a good run. It’s okay. So, there’s not one ounce of, ‘Is there anything?’ I would totally play again if it’s worth it, but I just don’t know how.”
