It is 16 years sinceThe Devil Wears Pradabecame a hit movie, and of course, that means that a sequel has been discussed on a number of occasions. However, even though fans may be up for seeing the comedic interpretations of the stresses of the fashion world return to the big screen, one person who is adamant it won’t happen is starAnne Hathaway.

The Devil Wears Pradastarred Hathaway as the put-upon journalist Andrea Sachs, who bags herself a position as the assistant of the difficult and hyper-critical Miranda Priestly, played by the always phenomenalMeryl Streep. Andrea finds that the strain of the job turns her into someone she doesn’t like and eventually quits to save her relationships with friends and family, giving the movie the moral of not becoming so lost in a career that you lose the people in your life.

The Devil Wears Prada

With the movie earning over $326 million at the box office, a healthy ten times its estimated $35 million budget, it is not surprising that thoughts on a sequel have been passed around, especially after the original novel’s author Laura Weisberger wrote the follow-up novelRevenge Wears Pradain 2013. However, it seems that the lead stars of the movie have not been inclined to jump back into the characters’ high-end shoes, and speaking toEntertainment Tonight, Hathaway doubled down on her belief that there will never be a sequel. She said:

“There’s not going to be a sequel. It’s not gonna happen. It’s just like, we can’t do it. It’s not gonna happen. It exists. There are other films. There will be other films. We can just watch that one [The Devil Wears Prada] again.”

How WouldDevil Wears Prada 2Work?

For a while, there was a question of how it would be possible to do a sequel toThe Devil Wears Pradawithout retreading the same story or undoing some of the character development and message of the movie. The answer to this seemed to become apparent whenRevenge Wears Pradawas released by author Lauren Weisberg seven years later. The blurb of the novel offered the possible plotline, which involved Andy attempting to keep her life afloat without crossing paths with Miranda again. The blurb reads:

“Andy has just turned thirty and is an incredibly successful magazine editor, working closely with her best friend Emily, another Runway survivor. She’s about to get married – life’s on track and she’s been careful to stay clear of Miranda Priestly, her dreadful first boss. But Andy’s luck is running out. Miranda Priestly isn’t the kind of woman who hides in the background. She’s back… and more devilish than ever.”

While this could easily give the sequel talks a kick-start, there has still been no movement on a new theatrical installment. Whether that is from the lack of interest from its stars, the somewhat mixed reaction to the story of the sequel novel, or simply that the original movie ended in a complete and rounded way that a sequel would undo its message, it seems that the Devil will probably not be wearing Prada again on the big screen anytime soon.
