What’s American Fiction About?

American Fiction

Based onPercival Everett’s 2001 novelErasure,American Fictionexplores the human need to develop stereotypes and label people based on any characteristic, judging those who escape those descriptions and commonplaces for not complying with what is socially accepted.

Wright plays a writer whose career is going through a difficult moment, so he writes a new book using a pseudonym to prove an important point. Check out the official synopsis:

“AMERICAN FICTION is Cord Jefferson’s hilarious directorial debut, which confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk, a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from ‘Black’ entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish ‘Black’ book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.”

This is not the first time that Jefferson has exposed social hypocrisy; he has done so in several of his previous projects, even when it does not seem like it.The Good Placeis one of thegreat projects the director worked on, that analyzes the subjectivity on which what is good and what is bad is built, and how these conceptions change over time. That is, it helps to expose that right or wrong is not black or white, because there are many grays in between.

Even in the science fiction series,Station Eleven, Jefferson explores the moral and ethical complexity of the human being, and our need to replicate what we know and believe in. The series focuses on a group of survivors of a deadly virus that has devastated humanity, as they try to rebuild the world. Something that will not be easy when they meet other groups, who have different ideas of what should be done.

American Fictionreceives its limited release on August 07, 2025, with a wider release on July 14, 2025.
