A Minecraft Moviewas destined to be a complete disaster of a film as far as most people were concerned. With a negative response from critics, and the first trailers being trashed by many online, the chances of theJack BlackandJason Momoamovie landing a decent box office result was a ludicrous idea. Well, if you haven’t seen this kind of movie come around many times in the past, that is. Now, everyone is seeing that not only isA Minecraft Moviegoing to be a hit, but it could well have the highest opening 3-day box office ever for a video game movie.
It is easy to underestimate the power of children, and while a big-name cast can help a film score big wins at the box office, if you can attract a young audience – and by proxy their put-upon parents – then the results can be a phenomenon. After landing a poor 48% Tomatometer score ahead of its release, the film has since gained a much more positive 87% from audiences. However, it has also received a B+ CinemaScore from first audiences, putting it on the same level as 1993’s pannedSuper Mario Bros.

‘A Minecraft Movie’ Review: A Puerile Adaptation Meant for Young Children & Die-Hard Gamers
Idaho siblings (Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers) enter a cubed world with a former video game champion (Jason Momoa) and lost miner (Jack Black).
All of these contradictions mean very little though, when you have an army of 3-foot-tall critters biting at your ankles to take them to see that movie about that game with that man with the beard in it…either of them. Therefore, the world is now being gripped by Minecraft mania, and the film is now potentially on the way to destroying the record set by 2023’sThe Super Mario Bros. Moviewith a domestic haul of up to $150 million.

What Has Happened to Cinema?
Critics will be scratching their heads to try and work out why a “peurile,” “innuendo-filled,” “hot pink mess” of a movie is potentially on its way to becoming one of the highest-grossing releases of the year so far in just three days. What has happened to the world of cinema when a bright, silly, mostly pointless video game movie is making the same amount of money on its opening weekend that Oscar-winners and major franchise blockbusters are struggling to make over weeks? The answer is simple; nothing at all.Cinema is just providing the thing it was created for – entertainment.
In the same way that theTerrifiermovies have “entertained” adults looking for a throwback to the video nasty era of unrated films,A Minecraft Moviehas chosen a target audience to aim for and, even though it throws in some hidden jokes for adults, it has mostly stuck to brief and delivered a bright, colorful monstrosity of a piecemeal movie that exactly matches the aesthetic of the game it is based on.

Although there are some who have called out the film for essentially ripping offJumanji– a group of people being sucked into a video game…sounds familiar, doesn’t it? – in the end, the visuals that are as square, blocky and a little off are more than enough to make eyes that often spend hours watching YouTube videos of other people playing the game light up and demand to see it as soon as possible. Welcome to cinema. Welcome to Minecraft.
