After nearly two decades, we finally return to the post-apocalyptic, rage-infested world in the first trailer for director Danny Boyle’s long-awaited horror sequel,28 Years Later. Following on from 2002’s critically acclaimed28 Days Laterand its 2007 sequel28 Weeks Later,28 Years Laterwill at last reveal what has happened to the world since the onslaught of the Rage Virus and the “zombies” that took over.

Directed by Danny Boyle, who co-wrote the screenplay with Alex Garland,28 Years Laterboasts a stellar cast which includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, and Edvin Ryding.28 Days Laterstar and now Oscar winner Cillian Murphy will also return to reprise his role from the first movie. A return thatwill be done in a “surprising” way, according to executive producer Tom Rothman, who previously teased, “but in a surprising way and in a way that grows, let me put it that way.”

‘28 Years Later’ Is the Beginning of a New Horror Trilogy

Isn’t it always the way. You wait almost 20 years for a28 Days Latersequel and three come along at once. The plan is for next year’s28 Years Laterto spawn a new trilogyfor the franchise. While writer-turned-director Alex Garland has been struggling for years to bring the series back, he previously revealed that a “whole idea” for a new trio of movies suddenly dropped into his head.

“A whole idea for a trilogy just sort of came – bing! – into my head. It makes me really question what creativity is. I feel like an observer, a lot of the time.”

28 Years Later Star Reveals Huge Plot Details for Rage-Filled Sequel

Ralph Fiennes reveals huge things about the zombie franchise set to make its return soon with 28 Years Later.

The plan for a trilogy has also since been confirmed by producer Andrew Macdonald, who revealed that he, Danny Boyle, and the rest of the crew will go directly into developing the follow-up, which istitled28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Templeand set to be helmed byCandymanandThe Marvelsdirector Nia DaCosta.

“We’re making, hopefully, three more 28 films with the first one called 28 Years Later that Alex has written, and Danny has directed, and has finished shooting. Then we’re just about to start, tomorrow morning, actually, part two. And then we hope there’s going to be a third part and it’s a trilogy.”

Released back in 2002,28 Days Laterwas directed by Danny Boyle from a script written by Alex Garland and stars Cillian Murphy in one of his first major roles. The story follows a bicycle courier who awakens from a coma to discover that there has been an outbreak of a deadly virus in London, which infects everyone and turns them into mindless killers.28 Days Laterwas met with critical acclaim for its reinvention and resurrection of the zombie genre, with a sequel,28 Weeks Later, being released in 2007 and following a brother and sister as they attempt to navigate their way inthis savage new world.
