14’Free Guy' (2021)
Free City presents the vibrant world of an online game where “players” wear sunglasses and have a life outside of the game, whereas non-player characters (NPCs) accept the chaos surrounding them and stick to their scripts. He meets Millie, a human player, levels up, and helps her on her mission to seek evidence about the game’s stolen code.
Meta Celebration of Gaming and AI
Free Guyis a clever, delightful, high-concept action fantasy that appeals to both casual moviegoers and hardcore gamers. Directed by Shawn Levy with a sharp and energetic tone, it blends live-action and CGI elements to create the video game world, but its true charm lies in the witty humor, sharp dialogue, and dynamic action sequences. Ryan Reynolds’ charming hero is paired with Jodie Comer’s lovable heroine, and together, they deliver an entertaining meta romp.
13’Deadpool & Wolverine' (2024)

10’Deadpool' (2016)
Who said Marvel can’t break the fourth wall on the big screen? The firstDeadpoolwas a critical and commercial success, leading to the development of two sequels in the coming years. It’s the role Ryan Reynolds was born to play: Wade Wilson, a former Special Forces operative who now works as a mercenary. After an evil scientist, Ajax (Ed Skrein), transforms Wade into Deadpool via a rogue experiment, he goes on a quest to seek retribution for the damage done — although the scientist’s crazed procedure did leave Wade with a couple of superpowers (and an R-rated sense of humor), so it wasn’t all bad for the beloved antihero.
An R-Rated Success Story
Deadpoolwas something of a passion project for Reynolds, and it certainly shows in its production. Reynolds evenfamously took a significant pay cutin order to not only make the film financially feasible, but to more directly support the film’s co-writers. The film’s low budget would be one of its biggest assets, however, as its blend of adult humor and self-aware superhero plotting would snag a record-breaking $782.8 million at the box office. Reynolds' love for the title character is as clear as day, being thoroughly replicated in later installments.
9’Pig' (2021)

Nicolas Cage Delivers an Incredible Performance
While Nicolas Cage has built up a prolific reputation for starring in just about anything over the years, you can’t deny that some of his best performances come from movies likePig. A movie as solemn as it is tense,Pigpairs Cage with Alex Wolff and Adam Arkin in a surprisingly restrained thriller. Grief and loss are the central themes here, and just as Cage ventures out on a journey for his lost pig, he also digs up the very wounds that drew him to such a wonderful animal to begin with. The film would go on to earn a Saturn Award nomination for Best Thriller Film.
8’Deadpool 2' (2018)
Deadpool 2
Deadpool & Wolverinehas dominated theater discourse recently. However, if you’re aching to return to Deadpool’s prior adventure,Deadpool 2, you’ll be glad to know that it’s available on Disney+. Folks were quite shocked to see this follow-up start with tragedy, as Wade loses the love of his life, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin). Following her death — and a ridiculous opening title sequence — Deadpool assembles yet another team as he must protect a young mutant (Julian Dennison) from Cable, a time-traveling mercenary.
Cable Gets Thrown Into the Mix
Played to perfection by Josh Brolin, Cable is the highlight of this mixed-reviewed sequel as a hard-nosed cyborg from the future. “Deadpoolwas hard,” Brolin once shared on theTeam Deakinspodcast viaIndieWire, in comparing Cable to his Thanos persona in the MCU. He would go on to describe the difficulties in portraying the character compared to his iconic role in theAvengersfilms:
“Even though it was funny, it was harder. That was more of a business transaction. It was more, ‘We need to make this like this,’ which I didn’t feel that way with ‘Avengers.’ With those directors, they would constantly go back and referenceScarfaceorDog Day Afternoon. Whether or not it was a manipulation, they knew what to throw out there to bring it back into something inspired.”

Despite these challenges, the incorporation of Cable and other prominent X-Men characters made for a sequel that upped the ante in terms of stakes and production values. On a budget nearly double that of the original film,Deadpool 2would break the previous film’s record box office returns on top of cementing Reynolds' depiction of the character in the public consciousness. It would be a fantastic film from director David Leitch as well, having previously worked onJohn WickandAtomic Blondein the years prior toDeadpool2’s release.

Bullet Trainis a movie that not only brings an original premise to the table, but it does so with plenty of laughs and engaging themes. It’s stylish, it’s spectacular, and its individual performances make for a film that’s as fun as it is frenetic. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, in particular, was a notable standout. Plus, seeinghow David Leitch directed this film(having previously worked on the firstJohn Wickfilm), you’re able to expect plenty of impressive action scenes as well.

Is the New Disney+, Max, and Hulu Bundle Worth It?
6’Daredevil' (2003)
Yes, 2003’sDaredevilis technically rated PG-13. But the existence of an R-rated director’s cut justifies a place on this list. Before Ben Affleck took on the shadowy cowl of The Dark Knight, he would don the blood-red suit of Daredevil, a blind lawyer who moonlights as a vigilante superhero. Though he’s blind, Daredevil has since developed superhuman hearing and incredible physicality, allowing him to take on the forces of the underworld crime boss known as Kingpin.Jennifer Garner co-stars as Elektraalongside Michael Clarke Duncan, Colin Farrell, and Jon Favreau.
The Start of Great Things to Come
WhileDaredevilmay pale in comparison to the similarly-titled Netflix series, there are some fantastic things to look forward to in this slick superhero film. For starters, Jennifer Garner’s performance as Elektra is nothing short of incredible, eventually netting her character a dedicated spinoff film in 2005. Though Affleck’s performance as Daredevil saw a bit more mixed reception in comparison, the film’s impeccable style and impressive stunts carry its weaker aspects to a thrilling finale. As a fun plus, its licensed soundtrack remains as a lovable time capsule from the early 2000s.
